There is lots of possibilities for wildlife here, but my disappointment is in how it is presented for birdwathers. The NEW visitors center is strange as others have commented. A map was provided to me at the visitors center and that is about it. Why didn't they explain the numbers in the ponds on the map are the #'s on the post near the pond for parking?? The trail that starts at the visitor center is "what for". It is through tall weeds and you don't overlook anything. You do walk near -- a pond,, but , why not have the trail around the pond. The parking lot is large, 3-4 picnic tables are out front of the building. A clean restroom with the entrance on the outside is available. I couldn't find GOOSE Pond/Visitor center, and we had already driven 1 1/2 hrs to get there. Even when I called the visitor's center for GPS coordinates I was given the wrong ones. We were close, but signage around the large acreage should have the same map available at the "service centers" as you get in the Visitors Center so you can figure out what roads in the area are part of Goose Pond. Most roads are gravel/dirty roads, narrow with no shoulders. The "service centers" was a tall roofed leanto with information for hunters. BirdWatchers are not well represented here. We had a good time because we stopped other birders and asked questions. The water was low to non-existent in every pond. I am sure other times of the years there are birds here -- as other birds commented -- but not in Sept. I will try back in March, now that I know how to get here. I'd heard wonderful reviews about this place from bird enthusiasts.....so I visited. September was a horrible time to visit as I saw virtually nothing. This place is very different than other nature reserves/wildlife reserves I've visited.....it was difficult to access and is spread out over acres and acres of ground with private property interspersed between. Trails were not to be found. Not for me.

Things have changed since the 'Not in Sept?' review. On a weekday morning in mid-March the visitor center was staffed and there was an exhibit installed. The individual staffing the desk had been out earlier and was able to make some suggestions. He told me that there were three whooping cranes on the premises and indicated that since this is a fish and wildlife area (as opposed to a nature preserve?) I could hike anywhere the terrain would support me. He further indicated that all of the dikes that farmers had built are still largely intact and make for decent trails and he suggested, somewhat tentatively, hiking around pools MPE1, 2 and 3. I then went to one of the parking areas just to the south of the visitor center and observed the three whooping cranes where he indicated that he had seen them. They eventually flew off to the north and I drove north to the parking area north of MPE1. I ran into a wildlife photographer with a very large lens who was done for the day. He said the numbers of birds was down quite a bit from two weeks before, but the number of species was still high. He had seen coots, wood ducks and ring neck ducks and had hoped to see swans but hadn't. My hike was easy, good and about 5 to 6 miles. I saw the swans he had heard about, and some pelicans, red wing blackbirds, mallards and wood ducks. Because I was hiking on top of the dikes the birds could see me coming a mile away. I saw a lot of birds on the wing from a distance. My binoculars frequently weren't up to the task, so I guess I saw the coots and ring neck ducks but can't be for sure. It was a great way to spend a sunny spring morning.

Strange place. The "visitor center" is a large, striking building from the outside and essentially an open room inside. The walls are glass, possibly as a viewing area but not feeding we could find and the nearest cover for birds was a long way away. You regists with a permit but I havent a clue what it is for or what you are to do with it. Dont expect a video, displays, ranger talks, or other things associated with a visitor center. We asked if their were picnic tables and were told picnics were not allowed. The map is helpful although some of the interconnecting gravel roads had their signs missing. We stopped in four of the overviews and did see three birds wading and a large number in a pond about a mile away. It may be different in migration season but cant recommend a visit in Sept.

We visited Good Pond again last weekend to see what migrating birds we might see. We saw many sandhill Cranes, herons of all shapes and sizes and were blessed to see 7 whooping cranes. We saw three pair and one pair has a juvenile. What a day. Many harrier's around the main pond. What a great day.

We've never been disappointed with a visit to Goose Pond FWA. Last year we happened to hit a day when an enormous flock of snow geese were visiting. Today we saw sandhill cranes, a bald eagle and a pair of whooping cranes among many others. Nearly every time we've come we've seen a variety of water birds including coots, buffleheads and pelicans. Besides birds, we've also seen deer and snakes and a various butterflies. Check in at the visitor center for a permit. The staff are friendly and helpful, there's restrooms and indoor and outdoor viewing areas. Bring binoculars--the more interesting birds tend to be a-ways from the road. Kayaking, canoeing, fishing (with some restrictions) and hunting are available. (See the website for hunting limitations and regulations.) Oh, and it's all free (other than the permits required for certain activities such as hunting and fishing anywhere )

The greatest place in Indiana to enjoy birds of all types and sizes. This is one of our "go to" places in the spring to start watching the migration of birds. It starts with the sandhill cranes, the whooping cranes, snow geese and the american white pelicans. Each season has a different variety of birds and wonder. You can always see an eagle or two, hawks, and multiple other types of birds. Truly a great place for the soul.

Most easily accessible properties. You can see kayakers entering at roadside and people fishing all over. Bird watchers have over 9,000 acres to explore. I like watching sunrises over the water.

Great place to watch birds of all kinds, nesting and swimming around. Also there are 2 Eagles nest about 1 mile east of Goose Pond, 1 is right in plain sight along the hyway. It is real neat to watch them feed their young. Bur remember you can not get close up, it is against the LAW
