Under new owners, now opens occasionally.
This has been a garden magazine favourite for many years, and we finally saw it today on an open weekend. Fabulous "Sissinghurst" style garden, apparently originally laid out approx. 10 years before Sissinghurst.
Lots of individual colour themed garden rooms, with the Tudor manor house as a beautiful backdrop.

It has a bohemian feel to me, where the indulgence is purely in the garden art along Arts and Crafts ideals of aesthetics, juxtaposed against myriad tales within the house. When I visited 2015-2018 it had been the tender work of a Maryanne for years. Gorgeous urn creations and placements, especially in the courtyard. She says, the Head Gardener at Risley feels, "Cothay is the best garden in England". Go there to explore your soul. I believe she sold recently... which of course is sad because the feeling was very spacious, and abundant for garden lovers. For instance it's hard to find the place to buy tickets! Eventually you'll find it, and enjoy the journey :)

This place is a real gem a lovely and interesting house and esquisite gardens. We went on the last day of the season but will definitely return next summer to see the gardens in their full glory.

Amazing place hidden in the Somerset countryside. Peaceful location with beautiful garden. This is a private home, so often the owners are working in the garden and are full of knowledge about the manor and its history.

Not that easy to get there, country lanes, coaches must come in on a different route. Garden is like rabbit Warren, hidden gems round each corner. Wish I had visited earlier in the Summer when all the plants would have been at their best. Nice tea room and also plants sold at good prices. Nice lake with ducks. Well wortha visit.

This place is just magical - a stunningly beautiful medieval house that rises from its surroundings and nestled deep in the countryside .... English history at its most intriguing - ... it is also a much loved family home , laid back and unpretentious - the owner gave us a wonderful tour of the house and it’s artefacts - beautiful and much loved antiques - and such an interesting guide in the form of the ‘ chatelaine’ as she described herself.
The cafe serves lovely food - a limited but super menu - altogether magical / we shall go back ! Lots!!!

My partner and I have visited before (enjoying our visit then) and being that it was her birthday today, she wanted to visit again. We headed there today but this time with our children (one 10 the other 3) and other adult family members. We wanted to visit the gardens and being a Saturday a sign said to ring the bell for access to gardens.

It wasn't exactly obvious where the bell was located, we walked over to the tea room and found a bell outside so rang it. However, we didn't feel convinced that this was the correct bell so one of our family members walked round and called at a door. He spoke to an elderly lady (believed to be the owner) about entering the gardens. At that point I walked round with my kids and they noticed she had a dog, being animal lovers (we have our own dog) they ran over to greet it. Our family member was then told that it was totally unaceptable behaviour (they merely ran across a stone drive nothing else) and we weren't welcome.

My children are not retribates in the slightest. I garden as a living and my kids are fascinated by nature. They are well behaved and respectful. My daughter loves smelling flowers, looking at the colours and all the insects that are attracted to them. They don't by any means climb over anything, if that was the case then we wouldn't take them to places like Cothay.

We walked away disappointed but I guess the owner will not care about this review. She didn't seem welcoming in the slightest and very judgemental. I understand they put on Christmas fares there, I imagine she dresses like the Grinch for them because that's how she's come across to me. I hope other parents take note and don't waste time finding the place only to be disappointed like us by the hospitality.

As I said at the start, we enjoyed our previous visit but then we were greeted by a volunteer. Perhaps those that help there could give some guidance to the owner.

We visit the garden regularly and I was already aware of the rule that children cannot enter the house which is fair enough as it is a museum! But today when my daughter and I were enjoying the quietness of the courtyard, an old lady (the owner?) jumped out of nowhere screaming at my 4 year old daughter "NOOO CHILDREN!!!!!". She assumed my daughter was treading on flowers which she was not as my daughter is big enough to know that she would kill them. It was deeply unpleasant and the lady didn't even apologize.

Have you ever wondered what it must have felt like to live in a Manor house in 1485? Well, this is no film set, this is real!

Its also a beautiful family home, and feels like it. We went there for two nights and had the most wonderful time. Mrs Robb, the owner, aided and abetted by her two lovely dogs made us very welcome and allowed us to relax totally. The sight of the main hall alone takes your breath away when you first see it.

The walls in several rooms have surviving wall paintings, which you just don't see anywhere outside of a handful of ecclesiastical buildings, and the whole house just breathes atmosphere.

Mrs Robb herself cooked us a lovely breakfast each day, and then we explored the gardens, all 12 acres of them, immaculately tended and very colourful, with some really quite unusual plants. No signs on the planting, but then this is a home first and foremost, would you put signs in your own garden?

Yes its hard to find, yes its quirky, yes its an amazing place, yes its unique, and yes its not entirely slick commercially thank heavens.

If you love very old buildings and stunning gardens then this is for you!

Oliver Cromwell couldn't find it but we did...eventually!
Lovely gardens but don't expect to find any plants or trees labelled up so bring your own book if you want to know what you're looking at.
The place appears to be run on a shoestring with, for example, one person (perhaps a volunteer on the day we visited?) on the admissions till doubling up as tearoom chef, waitress and Bottlewasher so don't expect swift service. I gather there are few full time staff (apart from the hands-on owner), several part time staff and lots of volunteers who together keep the gardens brilliantly well maintained. Visitors are left to their own devices as there are very few signs and no maps of the grounds as far as we could see. So the impression I was left with was that visitors were a necessary evil...
However we'll visit again (when the Manor is open) as it's a stunning place, totally uncommercialised, excellent loos, uncrowded and with a fair admission price (£7.80 a head)
