Lots of ancient woodland can be discovered on the high weald in east Sussex. Lots of free parking and can take long walks and not see anyone for hours and miles. Especially beautiful and peaceful during springtime when the woodland blooms with flora.

The High Weald covers a wide area up from the coast of East Sussex and into Kent. The undulating landscape is particularly attractive, mostly fields and woodland free of people and buildings. Good walking country, dotted with ancient villages and rural pubs - and yet within easy reach of the characterful Rye and Old Hastings.

Covering an area of just over 560 square miles, the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is considered to be one of the best surviving medieval landscapes in Northern Europe. It covers, at the heart of South East England, parts of Kent, Sussex and Surrey. The area's "natural beauty" is made up of rolling hills, small, irregular-shaped fields (often the remnants of medieval hunting forests), ancient woods, scattered farmsteads, narrow lanes (ideal for dog walking), and hamlets and villages. These hamlets and villages developed from temporary buildings in wooded areas (known as "dens") where farmer grazed their pigs. In my area of Kent we have, for example, Tenterden, Biddenden and Benenden. In the villages and towns the buildings are, characteristically, stone, timber and weather-boarded. The main industries in the area include farming, agriculture and tourism. For tourists round my home town we are lucky to have three castles, Sissinghurst, Scotney and Bodium. For walkers, apart from the woods at Sissinghurst, we are also lucky to be not that far from Bedegebury Pinetum. I consider myself lucky to live in this area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to visit one of England's finest landscapes.

We live in the High Weald AONB, a beautiful part of south east England beginning south of Tunbridge Wells and rolling down to the sea between Hastings and Rye through verdant countryside speckled with historical towns and villages, and plenty of great pubs and idyllic views. The lanes can be narrow, busy and pot-holed, not a great combination, and the attractions and restaurants can be over-priced and a little crowded, but overall our favourite part of this green and pleasant land. Highlights for visitors would be Scotney Castle, Sissinghurst Gardens, Batemans (Kipling house) and Bodiam Castle. The countryside and villages are full of tea-rooms and pubs, and towns full of restaurants and music venues, although also quite a few chavs. History, culture and beauty. Well worth a visit if you can avoid the traffic.

The High Weald is a beautiful area to drive through - we were visiting local National Trust properties and found ourselves traversing narrow country lanes to find Bateman's, the sometime home of Rudyard Kipling, and then Bodiam Castle. We passed through numerous pretty village that, had we not had young children who just wanted to get from one place to another, we would have stopped to look around - Burwash and Sedlescombe stood out. Would love to return and explore one day and get out on foot.

There are many scenic walks in the High Weald. It's a varied landscape, with rolling hills, spacious heathlands, sandstone outcrops and many woodlands, and it's great for bluebells and autumn colours. I've done a wide range of walks there, accessed by public transport. Some of my favourite walks are in the beautiful countryside around Burwash, Rye, Mott's Mill and Eridge.

Beautiful area. Glad I've been but would not return because...

.. the roads are often narrow and the 'locals' (mainly from London apparently) drive fast and impatiently. Driving through narrow high streets with cars parked on one side and 2 cars trying to get through at the same time was not for the faint-hearted. Nor was passing another car (mainly large 4 x 4's) on equally narrow country lanes .

The roads are also full of potholes.

I go out for walks on the High Weald regularly. There is lots of beautiful countryside around here with lots to see. Part of the AONB is only a short walk from home, so I often visit if I have some spare time. If you want to go for a walk on the weald, you can be sure of a great walk.

The High Weald AONB is a remnant of a medieval landscape we don't often find these days. Small fields, steep wooded hills, gill streams and dotted with ridge top villages and many small farms. It is a large area that covers from Rye at the coast up to Tunbridge Wells and across to Crawley. Lots to do and places to go, check out the website for more information. Lots of footpaths for some out of the way walks and I love it. My favourite area is Burwash and Dallington in East Sussex, it feels the same as it must have felt when my ancestors lived there 150 years ago.
