Loved this place. You have to be prepared for basic accommodation , possibly in a dormitory, but our group of 8 had own rooms as we were the only ones staying.
It is remote but our driver managed to get the vehicle there from the nearest village side. We walked out 12 km in the opposite direction and it definitely wasn't suited for anything more than a bike.
We were on a wildlife and bird spotting tour so the location was ideal. Some very serious birders turned up in the morning so the place has a good reputation for sightings. Over 400 types of bird have been seen there. Hummingbirds including snow capped which we saw.
Dining area is candlelit as they only have solar power but that added to the charm of the place. If you need booze you have to bring your own.
It is run as a cooperative and they are desperately trying to make it work. Hats off to them for what they are doing.

An incredibly remote lodge that we hiked to and from. Stunning setting with a wide variety of amazing birds that we had not seen elsewhere. Simple but tasty home cooked food. The accommodation was basic but clean and and clean and comfortable and wi fi not always available but this was not an issue. Amazing to wake to the sound of howler monkeys in the distance. A great community project. Highly recommend.

Tranquil ecolodge in remote area with amazing views over the hills and forest. Lovely veranda around the main building to watch the wildlife or just take in the views.
Established and managed by local families intent on improving the local environment and enabling wilderness to be re-established. Very friendly and welcoming with some lovely home cooking. Dinner was served in the candlelit dining room which was nice.
Rooms are simple, but nice in traditional wooden style. Some with en-suite and others with shared facilities, all of which were spotlessly clean.
Some great walks to be done locally.
Overall highly recommended and great to support such a worthy project.

Stunning location for a remote night in the forest. The staff were so friendly, helpful and enthusiastic about their project. We saw some wonderful birds and had some fantastic walking through the forest.

Simple but comfortable lodge set high up with a wide verandah all round - a perfect lookout to spot the wildlife. Rooms are simple with comfortable beds (doubles or bunks or both) wooden or tiles floors and hot water. The two en-suite rooms out the back have electricity but only for lighting- device charging in the main building or bring your battery pack.
Easy 4k walk in from El Humo or track from this side driveable (our minibus went up!).
Simple but tasty meals cooked by the family in the kitchen that is open to the lovely dining room.
3k circular walk (shorter circuits possible) along a good path to immerse yourself deeper into the forest.

We only visited here for a couple hours on our way toward San Gerardo de Data. This area is known as a birding hotspot thus explains our interest. We hiked a trail across from the main building. The birding was slow and we didn't linger long as there was a threat of rain in the air. We had some luck but missed out on the Ocellated Antbird as it wouldn't show itself. There actually was a good bit of activity in the trees surrounding the lodge rooms. Might be worth a couple days stay next visit.

This place is pretty amazing...its a birders paradise - and a lot can be seen just from the veranda..
Its a basic eco lodge - and they really do mean eco lodge...so don't expect wifi and running mod cons..
The staff are lovely and serve great home cooked/fresh food. The rooms are basic (and you may need to share bunk rooms) but are very comfy and clean. There is nothing to do except listen to the sounds of the night and relax...
Family run - being transformed into a co-op.
Highly recommended!

We visited El Copal on a day trip with guide Cris from Peregrinus Expeditions (reviewed elsewhere on TripAdvisor). While the reserve is difficult to get to, Cris made it easy by providing transportation both ways. The reserve itself is remote, quiet, and beautiful. There is a cabin for rent as well as modest dormitory facilities, and they host college student groups a couple of times per year. This would be an excellent place for students who are studying abroad, doing summer research, mission trips, or similar, and we hope it becomes more widely known. The road through the surrounding area includes many small communities where Cris shared his insights about how the locals live, what challenges they face, and where there is a need for policy reform and/or partnerships with NGOs to help bring about positive changes.
During our visit we saw a wealth of bird species, both in the sunny morning on the balcony and during a rainy hike in the afternoon. Cris knew all the bird calls, which helped locate many species in the dense foliage. Overall, a beautiful place to spend a day or longer immersed in nature.

You need to be a committed bio-bum or birder, but if you are, then this place should be at the top of your list.
It's a non-profit reserve, so don't expect anything but the basics. Other reviews spell this out. Very nice people as cooks and caretakers though.
You should have a bird guide even if you know Spanish. You'll be birding by ear on the trails, but lots to look at, including Ochre-breasted Antpitta, Dull-mantled Antbird, and Rufous-browed Tyrannulet. The veranda is fabulous for birds right after a rain. You're at eye-level not more than 10 meters away. Snowcaps are in the garden. Collared Trogons, Rufous-winged Woodpecker, Emerald Tanager, White-ruffed and White-collared Manakins all seen from the veranda.
I consider this place and the San Gerardo Field Station as two of the best birding hotspots in Costa Rica.
Message me if you want deeper info on birds.

Hi all,
I am looking to stay at El Copal for a couple of nights end of Nov but cant seem to find any rates and the emails I've tried just bounce back (I prefer to go direct) so I was hoping someone out there who has been recently would be able to enlighten me?
Otherwise if you have recommendations for getting there without a 4x4 it would be greatly appreciated.

Hello EternalNo, we used Sonia Nunez at costa rica rgateway to make all our CR bookings, including El Copal. They will give you a price but it may include commission. Great place, very basic with battery lights. We really struggled to get our Rav4 along the road through the Tapanti NP from the west (in March, quite muddy), the road was fine from the north and east through Humo, any car would be ok on that road. From the west I nearly rolled the car once or twice and the bottom scraped alarmingly in places. Sonia may be able to arrange a bird guide for you

Does anyone have up to date information on the state of the road, can we access the centre in a two wheel drive car?

How do I make reservation for El Copal Reserve? Thanks in advance for your help!

Thanks for posting your review. I'd like to go birding here! When you say you need a 4x4 ... wondering, how bad is it really, and how long is the bad road? Would there maybe be a place to park and just walk the last bit if you were fit?

Hi, would love to visit, but wondering how tricky it would be as I can't speak Spanish. Would I be better off with an English speaking guide from San Jose?

Here's what I would like to see : The FRICKING e-mail so I can make a reservation !!!!! I have found that being able to contact a hotel makes reservations easier !!!! I looked at 4 websites on El Copal. If they mentioned an e-mail address it wasn't obvious. DUH !!!!

What province is el copal in? I could not find it listed on the map. Thanks.

We are planning to visit CR in FEB.I am a bit puzzled by lack of information on commercial transportation companies. I mapped out whick area and which National parks to visit. Road conditions are described as challenging once you leave san Jose. My plan is to make series of one way driving from San Jose to various places and back to SJ to fly out .We have 1 week. Tour companies want you to goo and stay at their places ,not even close to what I picked as best birding place or B&B with bird attracting gardens for reasonable prices.
Other transportation companies want $$$ and that exceeds our budget for our entire month. Anyone has names of the driver(s) wth a descent car ,safe driving habit you can recommend to us? One of us has a bad back and series of day trips are not a good idea.
Thanks.

I have a friend of mine who is an excellent guide and naturalist, also he has his own transportation, maybe he would be good for you...
