I cannot express enough how grateful I am for Ty and his coaching style - in two days of his instruction I progressed farther than I have in 2 years with two other schools and 6 other coaches. His setup is top notch (and brilliant) and he is focused on truly teaching not selling you gear. A comfortable boat ride out to a giant playground meant I didn’t get exhausted walking against a current before we even began and I didn’t have to fight tourists or other kiters for a spot. Ty took his time to ensure I fully understood all concepts, including some the other schools never even mentioned - and it all became so much clearer! The tower (a brilliant idea/design) showed him immediately what my major issue was and quickly helped my body understand what needed to happen to be successful. The two way communication while kiting was also a game changer - getting immediate feedback and being able to ask questions real-time saved so much time/energy! It is such a welcome change to work WITH the wind/kite/board rather than it being an all out brutal cage match every single time. Ty is a natural problem solver and when I encountered a gear issue for which there was no current solution available he went above and beyond to identify a unique solution. He truly cares about his students and their safety! He is quick to give praise and point out things you are doing right - even when you don’t realize you did them. If you are struggling and are on the fence about starting with someone new since you’ve already invested so much money in the sport - stop hesitating and call Ty right now. It is worth every penny! If I had started my kiteboarding journey here it would have saved me thousands. I can’t wait to get back out to Ty-land and continue to develop my skills with an incredible mentor and all around fantastic human!

I have been wanting to learn to kiteboard for at least 10 years. When I would research instructors on Facebook, one name kept coming up, Ty Luckett. Ty developed a unique method of teaching kiteboarding that separates the board skills from the kite skills. This requires a powerful boat with custom fabricated rigging. When I finally made the decision to make the investment in myself (sorta last minute at less than a month notice), I was very fortunate that Ty was able to fit me in.
I had three great sessions with Ty. We got along right away and I knew that I made the correct decision. Ty has the experience, patience, and skills to help you on your path to becoming a kiteboarder.
Beyond his skill as an instructor, Ty has great equipment including top shelf Cabrinha kites and various styles/brands of harnesses. Boards include Lightwave models, which big guys like me will need. He has a serious boat with top shelf Garmin plotter and radio with a 300HP Yamaha outboard. All that power gets you out to his preferred spots in the sound quickly. You also save time (and money) with the onboard air compressor that gets the kites pumped up quickly! If the wind changes and you have to go up a size like I did, the kite is on board and is deployed quickly. You’d be walking in to shore if you were learning on the beach somewhere.
Ty teaches on the Pamlico sound. It is not a beach, it is literally square miles of shallow, clean, warm water. It is great to be able to stand up and reset yourself anywhere you need to.
While you gather yourself and prepare to try again, Ty is talking to you using BB Talk waterproof headset that is integrated into the helmet. Using the headset he can tell you what to do even when out of shouting distance. It is a great tool.
Beyond all this, Ty is a great guy. He wants his clients to succeed and is genuinely happy when they do. Everyone is different, but I was successful in kiting regular and goofy foot and even going upwind. I missed out on my fourth day of instruction due to weather, but I am confident that I am on my way to being a competent kiteboarder. Book with Ty, you won’t regret it.
Homework:
Buy a trainer kite and practice with it. Park it at 12:00, hold at 45*, and figure 8s (all on both sides). I feel like it helped me and saved money in the end.
Watch the videos Ty sends you. He further explains the concepts, but you need to know the basics.
Things you should bring:
Towel
Sunscreen
Hat
Drinks
Camera/phone
Rash guard
Bathing suit that won’t fall off
Those booties if you are concerned with your feet. I did not use them.

Spent 2 hours actually kiting instead of getting to the site, setting up, and recovering the board. We boated to a nice spot off shore, still shallow but away from the beach and other kiters. Kites were pre-rigged on the boat, the electric air pump made set up fast, the head sets made instruction easy (vs. some guy yelling at you from shore that you can't even hear) and the boat made upwind board recovery fast. Did more in 1 session as would normally get in 2 or 3 sessions. Well worth it.... Thanks Ty!

Ty, you were a big help today. Your Tower and your patience in helping me get more comfortable on the board were just what I needed to raise my kite boarding skills. Thanks a bunch!

There is instruction and then there is practice. Capt Lucket is a great instructor. He can just as easily instruct a person in their 50s or a teenager.
His board training set up on his boat is one of a kind . You have to see it to understand but it really helps to learn.
Boat is set up to teach with air compressor , cooler , plenty of seats, new boat and the board training system .
Easy 5 star.

I had been struggling with progressing any with transitions and within 15 mins, Ty had me going and mastering transitions in both directions. He had the best and most simple way to explain things to me and it clicked. We were lucky to have wind but before I got on the kite, I was able to practice board skills on his kite rite pole he created on his boat. SO INNOVATIVE! I was so impressed! I can’t wait to come back and go out with Ty. I made so much progress with him!
