This is a fascinating and complex array of water powered technology. I was surprised by how many tasks were being driven by the water driven belts. The staff did a great job of telling the story of this sight and explaining the range of machinery in use. This is well worth getting off the beaten path to see, and accessing the guides is essential.

Hanford Mill is a museum in that you can walk around to several old buildings on their property and view period pieces of equipment and artifacts. But the real reason to go is the one hour guided tour of the mill building.
Back in the days, this property seemed to see a bit of everything; farming, milling of grain, a sawmill to make things out of wood, a general store and the list goes on. The crux of the tour they have now is to show you how wood products are made with the help of the water power channeled through a holding pond that can be released on demand. Where else can you see a water-powered mill in action with detailed explanations of how things work and some history thrown in as well.
This is a bit out in the country outside Oneonta and don't necessarily count on cell service all the time you are in the vicinity. But this made an easy second stop for the day after visiting the Baseball Hall in Cooperstown in the morning. Staff is super friendly and accommodating and at certain times of the year/week, you may be getting essentially a private tour into the past!
You should reserve ahead which is maybe better with a phone call than submitting their web form (you can't actually complete the reservation online).

The Hanford Mills Museum is definitely worth a detour. Located less than 10 miles from Interstate 88 in Oneonta, New York, you get to see a water-powered mill in the Catskills. RVers, parking is available in the Events Parking that is located across the street. Otherwise, park right next to the office if you are traveling in a passenger car. The one-hour tour is fabulous, due in part to the live demonstrations and explanations of the mill conducted by a wonderful tour guide who has worked there since 1985. Wow! All of the staff whom we encountered are friendly. They go above-and-beyond when it comes to telling you about the museum and area. That is impressive. The gift shop features some fairly-priced, locally made crafts. Bring your own water and snacks. Wear comfortable shoes. Be prepared for the weather. Come back for the special events.

Fascinating to see all the old mill machines working on water power! Docents were very knowledgeable and demonstrated how the old machines worked (and are still in use). Lovely property to wander around. A real gem off the beaten path.l! Appreciated the teacher, military and senior discounts and dog friendly.

Our family visited this museum during the Woodsmen's Festival being held here. This (working) mill and museum is absolutely fantastic. To see all the working saws and how life used to be during the mills heyday was unforgettable. We watched in awe as the water wheel spun, and the furnace powered the steam engine. Our teen was engaged with the museum volunteers and the stories they told. This was a one of a kind, and probably once in a lifetime experience for us. If anyone has the opportunity to take young people to see this piece of history, it is certainly worth the stop.

We visited Hanford Mills Museum with our kids and grandchildren not knowing what to expect. We arrived around 11 AM and left three hours later delighted, educated, and entertained. Our tour was handled by three different women as we moved through the mill grounds and buildings. All were interesting and knowledgeable. My grandchildren were kept interested and involved with hands-on activities including manually grinding grain and hammering nails. Most fascinating was to see the historic equipment including the water wheel and saws in actual operation. It was like a glimpse back in time. We finished the day with a picnic lunch on one of their tables overlooking the mill pond. A delightful visit all around.

1800's working grist and saw mill. Staff were very knowledgable about the workings of the entire mill. It was fascinating to learn how Mr. Hanford spearheaded development in his little part of the world. We spent an hour there and we could of been there longer. One of the best parts was seeing the sawmill in action. We drove down from Cooperstown for the tour (our son was playing baseball there). Highly recommend for adults and children. Well worth the trip!

We toured the site on a rainy day and it was VERY educational and run by a very pleasant, helpful and well-informed staff! The mill itself provides a wealth of information and Mr. Hanford was well ahead of his time with all that he was involved with in running a business and employing people in a small community. Our guide, Luke, was great! It was so nice to talk to, ask questions and learn from people who seem to love their jobs! What a asset to NY State! We will be back and have already told many of our experience. Kurt & Kelly M.

Nice location worth the trip. Really brings to life the workings of this mill from the 1800's. Took four children ages 5-12,they were engaged and interested through out the tour. You get hands on and in depth view of different buildings, machines, the water wheel, there is an education center building as well.

Thank you John for the review and for visiting Hanford Mills Museum. We especially like to hear that all four children had a good time, we are always adding new activities for children and teens. Hope you come again, perhaps for one of our special events, like the Antique Engine Jamboree & Powerfest on Sept. 8, the Woodsmen's Festival on October 13, or the Ice Harvest Festival, which is held on the first Saturday in February, (2/2/19). Thanks again!

My friend and I were hesitant, the morning of the Ice Harvest Festival, to drag ourselves out into the cold and drive almost two hours from Kingston to Delaware County, but we are SO GLAD WE DID!! This is a history buff's dream The museum itself had a great exhibit about industrial innovations developed in the area, and there were blacksmiths demonstrating at their forge, and it was so rewarding to harvest ice from the pond the same way they did it so many years ago!! It was an absolutely fascinating day and I just geeked out nonstop. I went with my friend and we were both amazed at the low admission price (which included a sleigh ride!) and the cheap price for a hot cup of soup (of which they had a mind-boggling array!) and fresh home-baked cookies. There were lots of chances to warm up, ice sculptors practicing their craft, and even while we were waiting in line there was always something to watch and I was never bored. I cannot recommend this experience enough for families, friends and couples looking for something totally new, delightful, wintery, low-impact, and fun at an INCREDIBLE value. It was so worth the trip, and makes me want to go to their 4th of July celebration - where they make Ice cream the old fashioned way out of the ice we harvested! I'm sure it'll taste even better because we literally helped make it.
