If you are beginner, like we were, this hike may seem somewhat difficult and, well, endless. At many points we felt that the hike was longer than the 3-miles posted. The trail starts off flat, yet slowly ascends the skirt of the mountain. About 1/3 of the way, the trail turns to a winding/curving trail. The firetower itself was 4 stories high and the views were incredible.
I caution everyone to bring essentials up there.

, Its not if its when you come to see the beautifull Catskill mountains, you should be sure to include your hiking gear.you got to check out Mount Tremper mountain, the trails are a challage and really neat when you reach the lean tube. you can see quite a bit on these trails and don't be surprised if you come across a fox or other animals, that's what makes it fun! I almost forgot there's a huge eagle nest if you bring your site with you....the hike alone is worth seeing the Eagles...yes I said Eagles!

Hiked up Mount Tremper yesterday, in the Rain.
The Path was very Rocky/stony and steep in places.
Once at the top, visibility was poor due to low cloud, and the fire Tower dangerous to access as every step covered in sheet ice.
We stopped to eat in "Baldwin" lean to, an escape from the Rain/drizzle.
The whole trip took about three and a half hours.

I took the Willow Trail approach and it is approximately a 6 mile hike round trip with an elevation gain of about 1400'. This trail is longer than the typical Phoenicia trail but more scenic (not a jeep trail) and a little less steep. Much of the gain is in the first half of the hike; atypical for a fire tower mountain. Parking is a problem at the trailhead, the natives don't want you there. Take water.
