Hiking Lookout Mountain Trail in Montreat
It has been several years since I hiked to the top of Lookout Mountain in Montreat, North Carolina that is at an elevation of 3,800 feet. With my grandson, Louis, and his Dad, Matt, on a beautiful Saturday morning we hike Lookout Mountain. The Lookout Mountain Trail is 1.4 miles roundtrip with 623 feet elevation change. The trail is basically a continual slow uphill climb as it winds to the top. The trail starts with a long stair step type trail. I’m 5’2” and these are tall steps for my legs. Winding up the mountain the trails passes through tunnels of mountain laurel and rhododendron. In some locations, there are switchbacks and actually wooden steps built where washouts have occurred. On a Saturday morning there are a lot of hikers of all ages so it is busy but not crowded. At the top are rocking outcroppings to scramble over that provide spectacular views. It is hot at the top. As a 75 year old from Florida (sea level), I definitely took my time climbing to the top with numerous stops along the way. It took me about 50 minutes to climb to the outcroppings. The top provides spectacular views of Montreat and the Sevens Sisters of the Black Mountains. Take Overlook Road in Montreat past stop sign, maintenance shed. There are two parking lots on right of the road for Lookout Trail near top of the road. A big rock says Lookout Trace - at the Parking lot where the trail starts. An additional parking lot is available further up the road.

Montreat Conference Center has protected more than 2000 acres of land as wilderness and generously allows public access to the excellent network of trails. Please be respectful and comply with the rules while visiting. Graybeard Trail is the most popular and well known. We took our dog for a hike in the winter. It was cloudy so no sweeping views from the top, but it was still a beautiful hike. Graybeard Falls is a small waterfall off the trail. On the way back, we took Harry Bryan, Julia Woodward and Sanctuary Trails. Julia Woodward Trail leads to another small waterfall. Overall, a great trail and beautiful area for hiking. Would like to return on a clear day to enjoy the views.

Great trail which intersects other trails if you wish to cut down the distance. We did 9 miles and did combine with other trails with all levels of difficulty. Great scenery during winter as you can see far and wide. This trail was fairly moderate but challenging in certain spots. Make sure you have good trail shoes especially when you are crossing/jumping across rocks to get to other side of trail via stream/waterfalls.

Eastern hardwood forest hikes in the Spring are my passion. This one was awesome (with a moderate rating). I admit that I worked hard, but slow and steady delivered a wonderful experience! Highly recommend seeing the shops at the lake after as well!

We hiked this trail with multiple levels of ability and we all made it to the top. The scenery is well worth the climb. Beautiful area and even in the middle of July, there was a cool breeze blowing.

Greybeard is a long trail that is listed as moderate, with some strenuous spots. Because Montreat has so many trails that intersect, you have lots of opportunities to customize your hike.

Drove over from Asheville on daughter's move-in weekend for a hike. Since we didn't get here til 3:30 only hiked in about an hour and 10 min. Rocky trail up not too strenuous, but definitely warmed me up. Hardest part was crossing the creeks, but a long cane was very useful.

Montreat is a favorite destination for our grandchildren (5 & 7 yrs. old) for hiking. Be sure to check out the variety of hiking trails at the Hiking Cabin -when open and on the web. Just google Montreat Trail Descriptions and you should get a PDF explaining each trail. We have hike Sanctuary Trail which connects to Julia Woodward Trail and return by Harry Bryan Trail. Not overly strenuous and scenic as crosses the creek and climbs mountain. For panoramic scenic views Lookout Trail is terrific. Off Montreat Rd. in Montreat take Lookout Rd up past where it is gravel road until find small parking lots on right side of road. There is a sign for Lookout Trail on the upper parking lot where the "steps" begin. This is a steep trail that gains 600 feet elevation in .57 miles. So it can be strenuous. They have added logs to make steps but that sometimes makes it more strenuous to make those steps. The last part requires scrambling over some rocks to the boulders that give the views. Also there is a nice path along the creek that starts by the parking lot near the Montreat stone entrance gate (on right side of road after the gate. - this winds across the creek and ends up at Robert Lake Park. Follow the blue signs for the Gate Trail. Lots of hiking in this area with well maintained and marked trails. Note: My husband is 74 and I am 70 in reasonably good shape but we are from Florida. We took our time hiking and stopping for rest breaks and we still made the hike in the estimated 45 minutes the sign said it would take.

There are at least two dozen excellent hiking trails around Montreat. Greybeard is probably our favorite. It follows a mountain stream, which only adds to the enjoyment.

Had very nice hike at Graybeard Trail at Montreat, NC. This and other trails on private territory open to the public at Montreat are a hidden treasure and match up with state and federal trails. Moderate to easy.
