We, too, had heard about this lovely hike from locals. The various reviews helped us confidently find the road off the highway (about 7.5 km east of the Nipigon Birdge), and the parking spot 3.5 km down the gravel road. The path through the woods to the right is easy to travel, and at about 2.3 km some bright pink tape marks the path out to the lake. The views are beautiful, especially in the fall, where the contrast of the yellow birch, aspen and tamarack against the dramatic blue of the water is a painter's inspiration.
The trail does continue, south along the cliff above the lake, and we found it to be well-marked at intervals with more pink tape on the odd tree. There are more spectacular views of Ruby Lake, and Lake Superior, as well as some vertiginous views back to the various cliff faces along Ruby Lake. If you carry on following the well-worn (and well-marked) trail, you will end up on a road that comes through the quarry, and back to the parking spot. The tape markings are not on the road, but it brings you directly north, through the old marble quarry. You shouldn't get lost.
In total, with stops to admire the numerous views, the hike took us 2 hours. Enjoy!

Did this hike on September 17 2020 and it was a perfect sunny day. Almost no cloud in the sky. No signs to get here. One of this mystery hikes. You could probably ride a bicycle to the lake trail head. Just drive off HWY 17 at the dirt road with stop sign, no signage,
most of the hike to the lake is all a ATV road, which could be done by a mt bike most of the way. If i had known. At the fork go right of course.
once at the lake it is amazing. I have done all the hikes in the Nipigon area. This is a nice hidden gem that not all people know about. The trail the lake goes to the left and not sure how far it goes. But it does take in all the cliffs of the lake for sure. I backtracked not sure how far the trail goes, maybe another time.
Anyone out there who done the whole trail? anyways a nice place to bring a lunch and enjoy the views.

Not so popular as other hiking trails around Nipigon, but one of the most beautiful ones! The exact trailhead is marked on Google Maps as "Ruby Lake Lookout Trail". If you are not sure, here are the directions: drive towards East from Nipigon Bridge for about 7.2km on Hwy 17. Turn right on a gravel path and drive for more 3.8km. Ignore a sign that is misplaced just after you turn and keep going until you get to a Y (approx 3.8km). Park there and start your hike going up hill on the right side. The first 2.3km you walk on a pretty open path (suitable for an ATV probably). Once you finish the 2.3km you will find in the right side, a trail path into the woods. It is well marked (see photo). Continue on that path for 200 metres and you will be at the first lookout! From there, the trail continues to the left. What I most liked is that trail keeps going by the cliffs, so it is pretty open with a lot of breathtaking views! As we were not sure about how far it would go, at some point we just decided to come back. But I would definitely go back and explore more. Very easy walk with stunning views!

Absolutely beautiful hike. After reading previous reviews, we were nervous we’d miss the trail, however, the trail to the lake is marked with pink flag tape and a blue diamond. Hard to miss. Astounding view, great hike. Will definitely go back!

I've hiked this trail twice. It is difficult to find and could use some signage. The first time I went was with someone who had hiked it previously. We hiked the entire trail loop, not sure how long it was but it took us a good two hours. The views were amazing. The end of the loop was very wet and muddy and there were a few areas we had to climb over fallen trees. I would definitely hike it again.

It's a bit challenging to find the trail to Ruby Lake, but once you do, it is amazing. The views over Ruby Lake and Lake Superior are equal to none. Plan on spending the day. Although the hike may not take you that long (maybe 3 hours), you will definitely want to spend some time enjoying the scenery.

OK, I am not a world class hiker, but I am a pretty smart guy. We had heard about Ruby Lake on a few occasions and were anxious to check it out as it is not too far away from our camp/cottage. Unfortunately, it took us three attempts over three years to find Ruby Lake. Would it really be so hard to invest maybe $50 for three signs that could give you an easily recognizable route to the eventual trail? It's supposed to be a provincial park which shouldn't mean that it should be devoid of useful signage. The road to the lake begins with a turn off of the Trans-Canada Highway, about 7 km east of the Nipigon Bridge, (assuming that it is still open ;)). Travel up the road (you will see a Ruby Lake Trail sign) until you hit a fork in the road. Turn to the right here (this is where a sign should be, but isn't) then head up the trail. An ATV could easily navigate the trail, although I am not sure that they are allowed on the trails and I am not at liberty to let you know how I traversed it ;). The trail winds back and forth for about 3(?) km at which point there is a smaller trail off of the main trail. The "official" trail marker is on the right side of trail, although it is set back slightly as the trail has grown in a bit since it was placed. There are also several orange tape markers now tied around a few trees in this vicinity to make you think that there might be something there - which there is. The smaller trail goes off to the right. It is about a 2 minute walk to the Ruby Lake lookout from there. The view is quite spectacular, and it is definitely worth seeing. Just don't get too close to the edge, as it is a long way down. Hypothetically, if you were to miss the turn off of the main trail, you would probably notice that the trail would get a little rougher and would also be littered with the bones of the countless other poor souls who were unable to find the trail marker. Thankfully there are a few more trees marked in the vicinity of the smaller trail which should cut down the magnitude of this ongoing tragedy. Using the Google Maps Ap satellite view is a help when trying to figure out where on the the trail you are. Enjoy the walk!

No, there aren't any campsites at this park but I would recommend visiting and staying at Sleeping Giant Provincial Park! It's about an hour west of Nipigon on highway 587 which is off 11/17
