Stunning place and history. We visited in August 2022 and we were free to walk around and take photos. As we understand it, the place is acullay called The Kent & East Sussex Railway (Previously or currently listed as Colonel Stephens Museum.
However - look at the webiste listing!). There are a few bits of information listed around the museum providing a taste of it's history. Summary - 10.5 miles in length - operated from Headcorn to Robertsbridge - passengers from 1900 to 1954 (Goods to 1961) - Reopened from Tenterden to Bodiam. We nearly dinned on here (Trip from Tenterden to Bodium at £100 each. However, having looking at the dinning experience and quality of food, we decided to give this a miss. You can still board a train from Tenterden to Bodium at £20 return and there is a good brewery near buy (In Tenterden - The Old Dairy next to museum) to visit as well. Definitely worth a look if your in Tenterden. You can get off at Bodium - walk around and then board a latter train.

It's free, but donations are welcome and we certainly gave. Lots of interesting bits of railway hardware as well as a great recreation of the man himself at work, plus a steam train and a good little bit of 3rd class carriage

We were visiting an attraction nearby and decided as this was in the area we would visit . The museum is free entry but you can make a donation if you want . The museum was very informative about the railways around this area and even some further afield . The museum also featured articles and history about the Stephens family too which was interesting. Well worth visiting if in the area .

What a gem. Very well constructed museum covering the life and works of a British pioneer on railway construction. I particularly liked the telephone audio files but the detail of the exhibits was great. It was free but make donation as the guys who help run it were really friendly. Bolt your visit onto the Kent and East Sussex Railway on the same site.
PS. There is a brewery and micro pub next door too!

After our day out on the Kent & East Sussex Railway, my parents & I left Tenterden Town Station & visited this museum.

There is so much to see & it's all most interesting, some of my favourite items I saw were the small scale models of engines & rolling stock.

I bought a few things from the bookshop on the way out too, which helps the society, of course.

The man on the door was very friendly to us also.

This place is definitely worth a visit.

What a wonderful museum, step back in time as you enter to see items from the 18 railways of Colonel Stephens where in some rural areas passengers were offered travel on mixed trains which was a goods train with one or two passenger carriages added and trains did not exceed 25mph. You wont be disappointed this is both an enchanting, atmospheric and educational experience.

The museum provides an overview of this eccentric who developed a number of light railways on a cheap and cheerful basis. Of interest is Col. Stephen's links with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood.

Great little museum showing how Col. Stephens developed light railways. Definitely worth a visit and it's free, just a donation is requested. Not to be missed.
