Lovely day out. Kids love seeing the fish prac jump out of the water to eat the food.
The Cafe is also very nice, however you could bring a picnic and enjoy the quiet grounds.

Didn't think we'd enjoy this as much as we did. Enjoyed feeding the fish & seeing them swish around for the food, often flicking us with water. The platypus was amazing! The young dark haired staff member was so lovely! Yummy pancake lunch. Great to do something different.

The Gray Line coach tour to Mt Field included a complimentary morning tea stop at the Salmon Ponds trout farm. Located about 45 minutes drive from Hobart. The venue has adequate car park space. There is a cafe, gift shop, gardens and self guided walk with map included of the various trout ponds and walking paths. A very relaxing place with large poplar trees lining the driveway to the entrance. The cafe offered us a pancake with Valhalla ice cream and tea/ coffee. Windows have outlook to charming gardens - no water lilies flowering for our visit. Lots of trout to see - various types and eels and breeding facility. The location has outdoor seating and a BBQ area. A relaxing visit and delicious pancake. No trout products on sale at gift shop. Worth a stop if you want morning tea, snacks. Enjoy.

Beautiful well kept gardens, nice location and interesting to see the different varieties of trout and salmon, however, I would have liked to have seen the real hatchery as well. We were able to see the historic hatchery, but there were no hatchlings or fry.
The highlight was seeing a real wild platypus swimming in the ponds, especially after looking carefully in various natural locations to no avail throughout Tasmania. It had climbed up from the river for food and then it climbed out and walked towards my son!

This is a very unique experience to learn all about how the trout came to be in Austraian waters. There are many different varieties here on display and to learn all about how they came to be in Australian waters is very interesting. Well worth the visit.

Watching the huge fish jumping out of the water for the feed was torture for my fisherman husband, who had been trying for 2 weeks to catch any Fish in tassie, but also an awesome experience. Having pancakes by the ponds was a really fabulous thing to do as well. The grounds here are also lovely to walk around. A cheap day out, buy some food and feed the fish, you won't be disappointed.

The site:
They have very nice garden, reasonably maintained historic site.
The site was overrated beyond belief. All what is there, 8 ponds with mainly the Rainbow Trout. No demonstration of the breading cycle, no access to the hatchery.
May be okay for very young kids, they get to feed the fish.
The Cafe:
I am a regular visitor to various restaurants around Australia and overseas. Very disappointed with the quality of the pancakes and coffee, we ordered.
Moca & Hot Choclate were terrible, both kids left them after 1st sip of tasing. Flat white didn't even have the coffee flavor. Compare to Machin made Shell petrol stations coffee could be rate at 5/10, this one 1/10.
,
We ordered 4 different verities, taste. 4/10, presentation 5/10, service 4/10, hygiene 2/10. Hair found in the pancake and the ice-cream. Told 2 of the waitress, they weren't apologetic. Took the photo and reported to the manager (I believe), he said "ahh okay".

An unplanned visit but absolutely worth it for our family. Entry was reasonable, and even better kids are free. The grounds are superbly maintained, and the fish provided a very interactive experience for us all. We loved that we could pace ourselves, and explore to our own timeline. We even had the pleasure of touching the eels (the worker prompted us to do so) and also see a Platypus on the banks of one of the ponds. A really great surprise. Highly recommend a visit!

Calming Gardens with some lovely large trees. We enjoyed a quiet walk around (after the bus went) exploring the easy to walk paths alongside the 6 Ponds that had some large Salmon and trout. Feeding the fish was also a treat. A walk on the riverside walk along the Plenty River was also flat and easy for us oldies. Gardens / Trees / Lawns very well maintained.

Crepes and coffee looking over the fish ponds. What an interesting history and the tree plantings are well presented and well worth a look for the budding horticulturalist.
