This hike locale is beautiful.
First, it’s not associated with the state park so at least one rule is different: no dogs here. And for good reason - the rim trail is all cliffs and not safe for even leashed dogs in some areas. The other reason is wildlife. Both times we’ve hiked the gorge trail we’ve seen deer and other critters and this planing a preserve wants to keep the natural wildlife happy and safe here.
Second. You’ve got two beautiful, and very diverse experiences to have here with the two trails. The rim trial is a bit dryer and warmer. A different rock type and a whole different view of the area. Meanwhile the gorge trail is greener - even in winter it seems more wild. It’s like the rim is more Ohio landscape like and the gorge trail is straight out of a Zelda landscape or Miyazaki film. This place is absolutely beautiful and worth seeing.
If you bring young kids you’ll want to really watch them around the rim, but the gorge trail is pretty safe for them. It is also easier - as it’s a mostly flat in and out for a little under a mile. The rim trial is a bit longer and does require some stairs to get up to it and then back down. Once up there it’s not difficult, just rocky- no climbing over rocks required.
This is also a great hike just for couples too.

Pictures don’t do it justice - this is a wonderful, short hike. As other reviews mention, a majority of the Gorge Trail is accessible. It starts from the same point as the Rim Trail, then veers off. The views up the gorge walls are breathtaking. There’s a grotto that’s easy to visit along the way as well. Once you reach the end of the paved path, the dirt path is still fairly easy to navigate, with only a few stone steps. The views are even more majestic in this section, making you feel like you’re a world away.
The falls were very small, as it’s August and a drought, but it was still worth the trek. This trail is a must-see, for sure.
We were there before 10 am on a weekday and had the place almost to ourselves - once traffic picked up, however, it was very busy.

We drove all the way here, but they do not allow dogs. In addition, the portable toilets are overflowing with feces and there are almost no trash cans. Thanks for wasting my Sunday.

This trail is similar to the Ash Cave trail. They are both handicap accessible with interesting vistas to admire. However, unlike the trail to Ash Cave, if my memory serves there were only a couple of benches along the route. Also, the restroom building was closed, and a series of port-a-johns were being used as replacements (at least one of the port-a-johns needed to be emptied).

Great time to go to see the colorful wildflowers in bloom. Paved path followed a creek. Not long. Last few steps to get to waterfall where a moderate path with rocks and needed to step over some flowing water to get next to waterfall - but you can stop before stepping over water and see everything just fine.

This is a beautiful nature preserve with a large parking lot to park in. The trail we hiked was absolutely beautiful and fairly easy to walk. We were with our son and 2 1/2 year grandson and he did great on it. Rock overhangs were impressive. It was pretty crowded on the day we went, but still peaceful and quiet, if that is what you wish to seek. Possible animals and birds to be seen so be alert. You never know what you will see! Also, Hocking Hills State Park is very nearby, also beautiful to hike with several trails to take. You can do both of these in a day (or two) if you start early.

This is a must do if you're in the area. We only hiked the lower trail as the rim trail seemed outside my personal fitness ability. The lower trail initially seems like a quiet walk through the woods, but the cliffs gradually start to climb around you. If you go past the paved trail at the end, you'll be transported to another world lush with greenery and giant boulders as well as two more waterfalls. Truly my favorite stretch of our entire vising to Hocking Hills.

Hands down our favorite hike in Hocking Hills! Do the upper rim 1st. But be prepared for a ton of stairs and roots! Amazing views await! Then, do the lower trail and prepared to be transported into another world! You really have no idea what is below the trees while hiking above. It's almost magical. If you are able, doing the upper rim 1st is a must! However, the upper rim is not pet friendly and I would use extreme caution with children. The drop offs are dramatic!

Two hikes here. Rim hike that is moderate and really amazing view into the hollow, surrounding area and cliffs. A lot of chances to get to the edge. The hollow hike is easy and equally awesome to see the cliffs tower up on both sides, the groto, large bolders and the pay off at the end with the water coming off the cliff. Highly recommend both.

This is a popular place for hiking. Even on a Tuesday afternoon in August, the large parking lot was over three-fourths full. Admission is free, and there are two trails here - the 0.5 mile Gorge Trail down the valley and the 2.5-mile Rim Trail which takes the long way around the surrounding hills above. We walked them both in about three hours, but we stop often to take photos. On the lower trail, which reminded me a little of Muir Woods National Monument north of San Francisco in California, it's cool seeing the tall trees, ferns and other vegetation which are protected by stone walls that rise up to 1,000 above the valley floor. The trail ends in a box canyon where water drips in from above. On the upper trail, you seldom get to places where you’re not blocked by trees, but once you do, there’s some really nice views. I didn’t find this place when I was planning our two-week trip around Ohio, but I think we saw something about it in a tourist magazine and decided to check it out. Park near the far end of the parking lot near the turnaround loop because the trail starts where you cross the bridge, rather than at the other end near the restrooms.

My 84 year old mother loves nature and wants to see the parks however she simply can't navigate the majority of them. Is this park on the lower rim something that's a bit easier? Is it wheelchair/stroller accessible? Thanks for your help!

Do they have trails that would be stroller accessible?

Yes, and the area is beautiful. You can't get all the way back to the falls, but there are little outcrops along the way and beautiful wildflowers if you are into those.

Do you think this trail would be okay for someone who loses their balance easily and doesn't like heights?
Rédigé le 28 octobre 2016
Cockle's Hollow is very flat through the first 9/10 of the trail, then gets a bit rocky at the very end.

No idea. Dave's answer seems reasonable.
