This is an awesome hike with great rewards in the views the whole way. We only did the lower trail as the upper is closed this time of year. But this was full of beautiful mossy forests to hike through. It is a moderate hike uphill but so worth it! A herd of elk appear to live once you reach the part where the forest ends & you are on the grassy hill & can see amazing views of cascade head beach below. They were grazing on the hill just below us. Sooo glad we did this hike. It was one of our favorite days of our trip.

The Cascade Head Trail it’s one of my favorite Oregon coast hikes. This summer for the first time I hiked the Harts Cove Trail bear the North Cascade trailhead. This trail is open and allows dogs. It’s a 2.7 mile hike to the overlook at Hart’s Cove. There is about 1/2 mile of moderately steep switchbacks at the beginning (and end). The trail takes you derp into an old growth spruce forest. At one point you can hear sea lions even though you can’t sea the ocean. You reach the ocean at a high grassy hill with views of offshore cropping of rock.

To access this trail is in itself a hike. Turn off of coastal Hwy 101onto 3 Rocks Road to the west. The drive is along the base of the mountain with the Salmon River estuary on your left. Near the end of this road it splits radically to the left and right. Take the left; almost immediately you arrive at Knight's Park, a boating/kayak/fishing access point with a large parking lot and restroom. This is where you park. The trail begins is at the north end of this parking lot, adjacent to the roadway, crossing the street, and continuing uphill, then downhill walking on the street until arriving at the Cascade Head Trailhead. There is a marker. Almost immediately the trail is pretty vertical. This is NOT a handicap accessible trail...see the end of this review for an option. After the first somewhat vertical climb the trail levels out to a gentle slope as you walk through a beautiful old forest then emerge onto a grassy open knoll with a spectacular view. For an easier and much shorter option, continue on old hwy 101 to the north and there is another option at the top of the hill; turn left and the winding road will bring you to a trail head that is not quite flat, much shorter and a beautiful view.

One of the best hikes on the Oregon Coast. If you want it easier start up at the nature conservatory if it is open. On a clear day you can see forever.

Cascade Head, a UNESCO Biosphere Project, has its unique trail located in Otis, Oregon. The trail is nicely managed so that you will enjoy its challenges going up and down the hills. Within just over a mile, you will have gained about 520 feet in elevation and have reached to the first overlooking/resting stop. There, a fantastic view is in front of you: Pacific Ocean, coast lines, Salmon River, Three Rocks, Road End State Park, etc. For those who would like to push further, you can continue to hike to the top of the trail which is over 1800 feet in elevation. Highly recommended.

One of the outstanding walks on the Pacific Coast. Triicky to find the upper trail - a long way on a frequently Forest Service road from the 101. But definitely woth the trail thtough the ancient Sitka Spruce forest and out onto the grassy headland.

When visiting a son at OSU we usually make time for some local hiking and sightseeing. This trail was a last minute add on and was well worth the effort to find the trailhead. It starts in a wooded area that I imagine would be pretty dark if one gets caught after sundown, then opens up to wide vistas. Fairly steep climb for the most expansive views, but well worth it.

On the recommendation of Traci and Jill at the Salishan Resort, we took the short drive to The Cascade Head Trail. The hike was moderate; a little steep at times but not difficult. Recommend hiking shoes but we did the hike in sneakers without a problem. Hiking through the forest was fun and enjoyable. However, the best part is getting to the top...fantastic views of the Oregon Coast...take a seat on the lawn and enjoy! Remember too hydrate! Well worth a visit.

First visit to Cascade Head, and I will return soon! The trailhead starts close to a well maintained paved parking area, with a public restroom. You first meander through quite a lot of shaded, wooded areas and several places with built in steps. Once you break out of the treeline, you get a view that beats (hands down) most hikes on the northern Oregon Coast. This is where your calf muscles start to sing! I wasn't able to complete the entire hike due to part of the trail being closed until July 15th, but I will be back. One sad note, even with the "No Dogs" signs posted in several locations along the hike, I did see one hiker with her two mutts. Does it matter why it says no dogs? You have to cross private property along the hike in some locations. I would hate to see the trail closed because some people will not follow rules they don't like. Please go to Cascade Head, just don't take your dogs.

There are a couple ways to do this trail so do your research, and know that one of them is usually closed some of the year. I recommend driving up to a trail head and starting on the North side, summiting then going down the South side. You will need a shuttle car or a nice friend. Not difficult, and the view is one of the best on the coast.
