Well worth the time and effort. Family can spend many hours in reflection on the
history that the Laurel Highlands can provide. It is just an hour from Pittsburgh and
Johnstown, PA. You can teach your Kids what American Heritage has provided.

The autumn rivals the New England fall with vibrant colors and cool, crisp weather.

Accommodations and services are reasonable. Look for local farmers markets and fall festivals, like Flax Scutching in Stahlstown.

We went to the Laurel Highlands for Ohiopyle and biking and found it to be absolutely beautiful. We enjoyed delicious foods at local restaurants, the Laurel Caverns and Falling Water.

Finally, I visited Fallingwater, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright for the Kaufmann department store family of Pittsburgh, and nearby Kentuck Knob, for the Hagan family, which owned a large dairy operation in the area.
Fallingwater is perhaps Wright’s most ideal integration of site and structure. The Kaufmanns purchased the heavily wooded property traversed by Bear Run with the intention of building a house where they could see its lovely waterfall. Wright refused. He said they would tire of the view in time and even cease to notice it, whereas the higher location he recommended, pervaded by the sounds of the gushing stream, would be preferable in many respects. They came to agree with him. The expansive window walls in many rooms and cantilevered terraces over the falls make the viewer feel part of the landscape, not merely an observer.
Kentuck Knob, located just a few miles away at the top (“knob”) of Chestnut Ridge in the Allegheny Mountains, is a much smaller, less light-filled home. On the approach, it looks like a ship emerging from the land. From its grounds, the visitor can see three states—Pennsylvania, Maryland, and West Virginia. Much of the view is obscured by the thousands of trees the Hagan family had planted, which make the site almost as forested as Fallingwater. In the house are many charming features, as well as some reflecting Wright’s well-known disdain for livability (the too-hot kitchen, for example). The house is privately owned, but made available for tours and now includes a sculpture garden in the meadow below. (A more complete review, with photos, is at www.vweisfeld.com/?p=4393)

We went to this area for a weekend trip of white water rafting and nature appreciation. We were blessed with terrific weather. We enjoyed seeing lots of wildlife when walking on trails and driving along the National Road and around Ohiopyle. We used White Water Adventures for a guided rafting trip on the Lower Yough and they were wonderfully organized and professional, much appreciated when heading down some of those larger rapids. We stayed at the very cool, historic Summit Inn Resort. Their website doesn't do the place justice. We enjoyed dinner of burgers and sandwiches/wraps at the Firefly in Ohiopyle and a great breakfast at the Braddock Inn and Restaurant on Rte. 40.

White-water rafting with Laurel Highlands was the highlight of our trip! This early in the season, the water was chilly but the warm sun and blue skies made for a perfect day. Our guide, Garth, was a true professional. He knows the river well - we were thankful to have him in our raft. He was knowledgeable about the area and even shared with us some other fun things to do close by. The rafting was a perfect mix of relaxing and exciting. We will definitely recommend Laurel Highlands to others and we'll be sure to tell them to ask that Garth be their guide.

Great places to hike in semi mountainous terrain. Animal watching is great. Mountain biking is also available. Restaurants and tourist attractions in the area are vastly over rated.

We found many things to do in this beautiful area in southwest Pennsylvania, about a 90 minute drive from Pittsburgh. We stayed at the Hampton Inn in Somerset because it was centrally located but there are many motels and B&B's in the area.
Our main reason for going there was to see Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater, which was spectacular. There is another FLW home in the area, Kentuck Knob, which was equally interesting and has a unique sculpture garden on the property.
Driving from the airport to Somerset, we drove through Ligonier and stopped to see the fort from the French and Indian War. It happened to be Fort Ligonier Days and a reenactment was going on - a great way to learn about history.
Two historic roads in this area also are worth driving - the Lincoln Highway and the National Road. Following these roads take you past covered bridges, more historic sites and beautiful scenery. A side trip off the Lincoln Hwy to the temporary Flight 93 Memorial is quite emotional.
