We came across Rose Bay on our way to Watsons Bay so visited the following afternoon. It is also the site of the very 1st international airport in Sydney. The beach is open to dogs so as we are dog lovers, enjoyed watching them swimming in the sea with their owners and running along the beach. There isn’t a lot of shade on the beach if it is a very hot day so bear this in mind if you want to spend some time on there and look out to the far distant views of Sydney.

Narrow beach between the harbour and the intrusive mansions but the sand is ok and it's a rare place that allows dogs. Most importantly, it's a rare part of Rose Bay that's not affected by the main road and the golf course.

I discovered this place purely by accident as I was trying to get to Bondi Beach from Manly one Sunday morning back in November. My google maps app suggested taking the ferry to Circular Quay, then a second over to Rose Bay and then jump onto a bus to Bondi Beach.
Hence I found myself briefly in this part of Sydney harbour - in the rain. Never mind. It gave me a chance to take a quick look around and watch a sea plane dive down and "land" (or should that be "water?) at the "terminal" near the ferry wharf. Looked quite thrilling.
Other than that, I surreptitiously visited the restrooms of a nearby cafeteria (Jezve Cafe) by stealing around the back feeling slightly guilty as I hadn't bought anything there. I shouldn't have worried because while I was there two large luxury buses stopped and disgorged all their aged cruise ship passengers who made for the same restrooms.
Eventually the driver of my bus, the 324, which had been parked up the whole time, finished his 20 minute or so break and I jumped on an continued my journey to Bondi beach.

At first glance, this large city harbour beach, with views of the Harbour Bridge and city skyline might seem like a go-to place. However there are a few things to be aware of.
Firstly, the water quality is can be questionable and swimming is not recommended at all for up to 3 days after a storm. Authorities who test and measure such things frequently report ‘increased microbe levels’ (ie bird, dog & human poo) after it has rained. It’s especially bad near the stormwater outlets.
Secondly, dogs are allowed off the leash here and there’s quite a lot of them. If this bothers you or if you have small children, you are better off heading elsewhere.
Overall, Rose Bay Beach is pretty low down on my list of beaches. There are just so many other better beaches around.
However there are still quite a few things to like about it. There are a few small, grassy stretches leading onto the sand, where you can sit in shade and the Rose Bay shops are conveniently just minutes away. You can hire kayaks here and there are changing rooms, public showers and car parking.
It’s a nice beach for walking along. The low tide goes out a long way so the beach can look quite different depending on what time of day you visit. At the far end there are colourful rock formations and rock pools.

Rose Bay is one of the larger beaches on Sydney Harbour. It is a pleasant enough spot, the sand is clean, there is shade and lawn behind the beach and you can hire kayaks here. But be warned: it is also a very dog-friendly beach: an off-leash haven for pampered pooches. When we visited the dogs were well-behaved and thankfully we did not see unscooped-up poops on the sand or in the water. But with this many dogs, I'm sure it happens

This is a lovely small beach & not overcrowded & perfect for a walk with your beloved pooch. I collect tiny seashells I find.

This dog friendly beach is to be avoided. We watched as a mastiff type dog first crapped in the sea then again on the sand. It's owner just watched and made no effort to pick up the mess. The rest of the Ist world's countries are banning dogs from public beaches. Time to catch up.

Even if you don’t have a dog you should visit this beach. The dogs have the best time chasing each other in and out of the water. The labs are the funniest. Being water dogs they just throw themselves in the water.
