My great grandfather was born in this cabin in 1854 so the visit had special interest for us. My grandson, who visited the cabin with us, saw the conditions endured by his great, great, great grandfather. However, the history and lore of this historic site would be of interest to anyone who wants to understand the existence of our ancestors and how they grew up in the early days of the country. Also at this site is a one-room schoolhouse with interesting displays and a barn with tools from the 1800's on display.

Super place to visit! Check the hours carefully, it's a volunteer-staffed place (please don't ding them cuz they aren't open as often as you would like). The schoolhouse was the bigger draw for me. It had a page of Rules for Teachers, 1872, that states, "Any teacher who...gets shaved in a barber shop will give good reason to suspect his worth, intention, integrity and honesty." Nice place to stop.

Sister was visiting from out of town; looking for historical sites in the “islands.” Should have looked online first. Walked around the ground, peered in the windows, looks lovely but would have liked the full experience.

My friend and I stopped here on a whim since it was open. So interesting! Lots of local history at the cabin and schoolhouse. They have many original items inside the cabin and the lady that gave us a “tour” was very knowledgeable about the history. She was very friendly and answered our questions.
If you like history, this is a must see!

We had friends visiting from New Zealand. The docent presented valuable information about life in the log cabin. Then we were treated to a display of farming tools in the shed. Finally, a good look at classes in the one room school.
Well worth our time.

We came past in November, so the cabin wasn't open for inside visits, but we could see through the windows and walk around it. It looked like it would be interesting for a very brief visit due to its age and historical value. $3 admission is reasonable, but not sure it would be worth more than that.

From the road this cabin does not look like very much. It is all too easy to drive by at 40 miles per hour and not stop. Don't make that mistake! The Hyde Log Cabin is a fantastic experience for anyone interested in American history. It is one of, or possibly the oldest log cabins you can see in all of America. It is full of history and the wonderful docents who volunteer to talk about it to visitors are an important source of information about the history of the cabin and of South Hero island. Our family was grateful for the experience.

Hyde Log Cabin was on our itinerary, IF we had free time. At the end of a long day of sightseeing, we had an hour or so and headed off to Grand Isle, VT. It's a short drive NW of Burlington, with beautiful views of Lake Champlain. I must say, do NOT trust your Garmin to get you there! When we heard the "You have arrived", we knew we had not. We drove a bit further north and turned around in an elementary school parking lot, explored a few other directions and started back to the hotel. Thankfully, I tried my cell phone GPS, and saw that the cabin is located just beyond the elementary school! Making a quick U-Turn, we soon arrived and were so glad we made the extra effort!

The docent was rocking in front of the cabin (in period clothing). She welcomed us, and proceeded to school us in 1700s era life. A docent who is knowledgeable and love sharing, makes the visit worthwhile. It was especially meaningful, as an ancestor had lived in Grand Isle about 1790. Sites like this truly make history come to life.
