My wife and I wanted to take a foliage drive along this less well traveled road - it was awesome! Most of the drive is on gravel roads, typical for northern New England, but the road is very well maintained. This is a gorgeous drive in the Fall and you'll see lots of suspended plastic lines in sugar orchards and some sugar houses as well. We saw very little traffic and had a gorgeous day - loved it!!

We drove this area after visiting Jay Peak. Easy to find and a slow, pleasant drive. Dirt road, but well maintained. Colors were perfect. Maple harvesting on the roadside and apple trees galore.

If you enjoy the beauties of nature, then this drive is for you. Be aware, this is a sometimes dirt, often bumpy road, so smaller cars will likely experience an uncomfortable ride. The “notch” is really just a pass through the hills, so there isn’t an exact point when you are at the notch. It is really just about soaking in the experience of the drive. My wife and I took this drive the first week of October and even though it was raining off and on, absolutely loved it. So peaceful and quiet and relaxing and above all beautiful.

If staying in Montgomery area, be sure and take this beatiful drive. Upper road is closed in winter. Look for the extensive maple sugar collection tubes on the way down!

Since we stayed a mere fifteen minutes away from Hazen’s Notch, we decided to visit the Notch on the way to Big Falls. The state route number is paved until, surprise, it turns to dirt. I kept saying Vermont’s state slogan should be: Vermont—Land of Dirt Roads. Don’t get me wrong, Vermont is a beautiful state, but dirt roads abound! We passed the Hazen's Notch Association building, which, as they warned, is only occasionally staffed in the summer. It was closed.

I drive our Honda Fit along the winding, narrow dirt road. I come around a curve and dead stop in surprise. Well, now I know how they maintain the dirt roads— a large plow slowly moved toward me, it spanning the road. Huh? I tuck into a driveway and let him pass, feeling sorry for the folks trapped behind the dirt plow.

After the plow passed, the dirt is soft and more treacherous— our tires dig in too much on a few hills. All the while we wonder where is this Notch? Where’s a sign? A pull out? Anything? Bueller? Where do the trails for Moosewood Ponds, the High Meadow, Little Rock Pond and Bear Paw Pond hide? My partner works from three maps to no avail.

Once we descended, we cross a named dirt road where she claims, yep, we had passed through the Notch about five miles ago. We guess that must have been where the road hit a high point and the trees looked thick and lush.

We continue on to our next destination. Yep, we can say we drove through Hazen’s Notch… we just weren’t aware of the event when it took place.

This is the updated version of an ancient Vermont road, built without equipment, by men hired by George Washington, to provide a marching path for the soldiers to get from the Connecticut river valley up to the northern lake Champlain and Montreal area during the war. Not all of the road, called the "Bayley-Hazen road", has been updated but this part is great, with only a few homes in the several mile stretch, it is in some places, steep and winding, in high altitude, it's a great place for a picnic, if you can fight off the bugs. It's not open all the way through in winter, but is used by snowmobilers.
Start from either the Lowell end or the Montgomery end, it's scenic either way.

High Ponds Farm at Burnt Mountain on Hazen's Notch is a beautifully (and minimally) managed cross-country ski and hiking area in Montgomery Center, VT. I'm not a skier, but spending countless hours hiking (or leisurely walking) on the trails in the summer, late spring and fall is a highlight of any day. Hanging out in the big meadow in the fall looking at the foliage or munching on an apple from the orchard, or in the summertime amidst the wildflowers, or sitting on a rock watching beavers swimming around in a beaver pond, or walking on a trail deep in the lush green forest, is akin to a religious experience in my book. I can't say enough about the beauty and peacefulness of this lovely place. P.S. Trip Advisor only gave me one choice for "sort of visit" and "When did you visit," but I go often with both friends and solo.

Well maintained. Beautiful place. Bring your dog, but don't fish there....not allowed. Great hikes. Lots of Beavers, frogs, toads, salamanders! Go hike the mountain, but wear your hiking boots, you'll need them on your way back down. The views from the mountain are spectacular!

Lovely smooth trails through snowy woods was beautiful. Rolf Anderson, owner, was the best. Very helpful and kind during our visit. A unique, out of the way experience I will want to repeat again.

We went to Hazen's Notch for snowshoeing. The price was just $5 since the trails hadn't been groomed from the recent snowfall. We were given a trail map and some directions. We got a little lost, but the trails are lovely and its a nice hike. A few extra trail signs would be useful, especially if the trails hadnt been used/groomed. Still, a lovely place to enjoy the outdoors- much prettier than the Nordic center at Jay Peak.
