The ocean spills out over the rocks. Is that how it got its name? Every view is a perfect picture. Rugged. Rough. Totally Newfoundland at its best.

There are a few ways to access Spillars Cove. The easiest being the parking lot where the houses are. Don’t go to the left hand trail that is the long way around. Go to the right and pass the map. You will cross lots of boardwalks then up a hill and down and the last boardwalk and you are there The cove is beautiful and well worth the hike. Enjoy.

We had a great half day hike here. The only downside was the road hike from one end to the other. we met some other hikers who chose to do the hike back along the same trail. That may have been a better solution.

Great trail, great views, great photo opportunties. There had been a couple if landslides, so be careful as you walk near the edge.

Heel mooie ne rustige plek om na een korte wandeling te bewonderen en er een poos rond te struinen. Goed bereikbaar gemaakt met houten trappen. Hou het voorzichtig als je van de paadjes afwijkt.

We started our hike from Slade Road which gives you a nice walk in past the ponds and trees. The trail is well maintained but there are some steep bits where it is easy to slip on the small rocks. You have to keep your wits about you but overall it is a relatively easy hike. There are stunning views in all directions.

This spot is a little difficult to find - you need directions from a local to get to the best spots but we walked here for a couple of hours marvelling at the power of the sea to create these amazing rock formations. A must do when visiting Bonavista.

We hiked French Beach to Spillar’s cove.

We followed the main road right to the end and parked in a small parking lot where we set off on the French Beach—Spiller’s Cove Trail. These trails were created by local fishermen to hunt birds or check for sea or ice conditions off the coast. The hike to French Beach opens to a long, quiet pebble beach surrounded by rocks. The beach overlooks Durrell`s Arm and you can see the Durrell Museum.

The walk to the beach took us about 15 minutes. From there, the trail veered right and uphill to French Head and over the Spillar`s Cove.

We prefer to hike on a loop since you don’t see the same scenery twice, so that has been our aim wherever possible. The trails are generally well marked. But be warned, these trails are rocky — like a roller coaster in places. Even though the high points may only be 60-80 metres above sea level, there is a considerable amount of climbing and descending, so bring good hiking shoes. You can also see unusual rock formations each of which, has its own name – we saw rocks shaped in the form of a cobra, camel and an aboriginal person.

This trail is about seven km long and the highlights include good views back to Durrell and a very rugged shoreline punctuated with sea stacks and steep cliffs. As on most of the trails we hiked in Newfoundland – traffic was very light. Along the hike there are many side trails that lead to exquisite views of the rugged coastline.

There are plenty of rocks to just take a seat to take photos or just to watch the scenery unfold in front of you. The hike varies from easy to moderately difficult.

This is a lovely trail starting out with a slow easy and climb up a grassy, rocky hill. The views just expand further and further as you go up higher and higher. The front face has a lot of loose shale, and pretty steep pitch, but you can go up on either side with an easier pitch and more sure footing. once you get higher there are several paths to take to the very pinnacle, where the 360 degree views are well worth the climb. Except for the footing, (and fear of heights), this is a climb most can do easily.
