We spent only a short time here while making a driving tour. It was Worth a quick stop to see the beach from another point.

Lead paint. Hawaii's solution to every park challenge is to close it. The Haiku stairs and Sacred Falls in Oahu are prime examples. Anyhow, take the access road down and park at the Kolekole gate - and walk in. Not that long of a walk. Bring a wagon or cart for your stuff - and enjoy. Great swimming and picturesque waterfall right there. Great lawn field for games. Covered picnic pavillion. My favorite spot.

The place is not suitable to swim as the water is quite strong at that place. But many people go there to watch the waterfall and to picnic.
Many cats leave there and I saw people coming to feed them.
It’s close du to lead in the grounds but locals and tourists enter the place.

We picnicked here. There was a sign indicating that the soil had too lead in it. We went anyhow and ate at the picnic tables. Many wild kitty cats in the bushes. The ocean is rough, the stream is great. Nice place to stop after zip lining.

We saw the sign on the highway, but drove past the first time. The main indicator is a spray-painted sign on the concrete barrier that indicates the park (next to bridge). You can park and walk down to the park, but most of it is chained off. There is a rocky beach at the end and an abandoned park that appears to taken over by some wild cats and chickens....

We had some difficulty finding the park, having missed it when we first turned off Hawaii Belt Road (#190). After going a short distance on a curvy road, we turned around and backtracked. We found the place when we saw vehicles parked by the gate. Upon exiting our van we saw the chain linked entrance to Kolekole and a sign re: lead contamination. This is quite discouraging because it looked like this had once been a very nice park. Park is located under a high bridge and has a very rocky shoreline, grassy picnic area , a stream with pool fed by a small waterfall. The ocean was rough here - high waves. I read that the park has been closed for almost a year (since April 2017). Locaion is not far from Akaka Falls State Park.

A prominent sign on the south end of the hwy bridge announces this park, but after you turn off, it's difficult to actually find it. Once you reach the bottom of the ravine, the sign there is missing, the road gated, and the hairpin turn-off is easy to miss. We drove right past it by several miles the first time. However, we finally did find it, and our patience was rewarded. It's a gorgeous spot downstream of the famous Akaka Falls. The surf comes crashing in to the little creek mouth, where another little waterfall feeds into the stream. Would have been a beautiful spot for a picnic, but...

Alas, as of Feb. 2018, the park still appears to be permanently closed with no signs of ever re-opening. What a shame. From reading the other reviews, appears it was open as little as a year ago, but it feels like it's been abandoned for much longer than that. The signs announcing the closure are all rusted. Everything is completely overgrown. The only other visitors were two local surfers (who had some amazing waves all to themselves). Meanwhile, about a half dozen stray (but strangely well-fed) cats have moved in and made the place home, sleeping atop the old covered picnic tables. The whole place has a slightly eerie and post-apocalyptic feel to it, as if nature has reclaimed this valley.

Ignore the foreboding signs and go see this place. It's worth it.

As of early December 2017, the contamination warning signs are still up. However, the chains across the entrance road were down... my guess is without approval! The park is now overgrown and has a slightly creepy abandon feeling. Appears to be a bit of a locals hangout. To bad it’s closed – nice shoreline and a scenic little waterfall.

This park along with the Hakalau beach park are closed due to high lead levels that were found in the soil. Also Hakalau park’s bridge on Old Mamalahoa is washing out.

From recent web searches, I could not find ETA’s on either. It is a shame as they are both beautiful beach parks.

We drove down to kolekole beach park and there was a chain across the entrance road. I was so disappointed as was my guest. I looked into the reason why and it appears that there newly discovered high lead levels in the soil.
