We checked out this local coffee mill for their free tour at 11am (also at 1pm). Our guide seemed reluctant to take individuals on the tour especially in wet weather, but when three of us arrived, he decided to proceed. It was very informative but very quick overall. When you get back to the shop you get to sample lots of delicious coffees. They even offer cream on request. They also have a cafe with drinks, pastries, and sandwiches to enjoy while you’re there. If you’re looking for something else, they have local specialty foods like flavoured macadamia and baumkuchen available for sale if coffee isn’t your thing.

I was introduced to K'au coffee a few years ago and made a point of visiting on the Big Island. We missed their tour because we got preoccupied with watching turtles at Punaluu Beach but we had a great experience in the gift shop/coffee bar. They had at least 7 coffees out for tasting and the knowledgeable barista talked to us about their processes, bean types, and our preferred flavor profiles. We bough a bunch, and then ordered lattes which were some of the best we had all trip! We'll return next time for the tour and more coffee!

Our family of five from Texas and Oklahoma visited Oahu and the Big Island for Spring Break! We were driving from Hilo to Naalehu and happened to see a sign for the Kau Coffee Mill and decided to stop by! So glad we did!! There were not any tours that day since we were there on a Sunday, but the employees took the time to give us a “mini tour” inside the store front! We learned quite a lot about the coffee operation and enjoyed the little tour!! We sampled some coffee they had before deciding which ones we wanted to purchase!! The employees were very friendly and helpful in deciding which coffees would be best for our taste!! Would recommend visiting if you are in the area!!

This coffee farm is close to Pahala and not far from the black sand beach. It’s worth a stop. We enjoyed sampling different coffees so we could make a better selection of which beans to take with us.
Prices are commensurate with their quality. The gift shop has many coffee items for sale, even single serve pour-overs. The shop is clean and welcoming.

While everyone knows Kona coffee region in Hawai'i it was nice learning that the coffee is actually grown in many other places of Big Island; here in particular Ka'u region as the name of this mill shares with.
The place is somewhat remote for the tourists since it's between the western part where many of us probably stay and the Volcanos National Park - where many of us visit... but if you end up driving through this area I say you should definitely stop it - plenty of coffee samples (free) to try and very affordable - I want to say one of the very few places that also was selling green beans that you can roast yourself!
We came here for the coffee but actually left being in love with their coffee treats - we took some home with us but also already planning to order some online for the mainland sweet tooth! :)
TIP: There is a free tour twice a day I believe but we unfortunately missed it as it was difficult to pair with the drive/National Park exploring as it's etiher 11AM or 1PM so perhaps if you driving east to the Park maybe do it before the park as it's not possible really to first to the park and make it for either times, you will just cut your Volcanos visit short and as much as coffee is great you can find it on other regions of the island, volcano not :)

We were just looking for a little place for an afternoon cup. Found Kau Coffee Mill on the gps and although it's a little remote the drive was nice. The shop and facility are very clean and welcoming.

Happened upon this coffee mill/store. So glad we did. A little hard to find (signage not as clear as could be) but lovely place to visit. We did miss the coffee/farm tour, but did see the macadamia trees and coffee bushes as we drove in. We also browsed the retail store. The staff was so accomodating filling us in on all kinds of their processes. I even got to sample a coffee I was interested in even though it wasn't one on display. The staff had some brewed and let me try it. Also an interesting video about the farm over time. The story has some unique items beyond coffee and macademia products.

Short drive down from Volcano to this wonderful coffee farm that is off the main road. Sampled some coffee while watching a streaming film on the outside patio while waiting for the FREE tour. Tour was informative and it was great to learn about coffee that is grown OUTside the Kona Coffee Belt. Kau Region coffee deffinatley needs better publicity as it is AS good as Kona.

Best avoided. Think you’re going to save money on Hawaiian coffee by driving out of your way to a coffee mill? Think again.
