We're from Alaska but live in Pahoa during the winter. The 2018 lava eruption took out virtually all of our ocean swimming spots :-( Fortunately, the Pahoa pool was repaired after the eruption and it offers a welcome respite on a sunny day. The pool is sparkling clean and well maintained. The water is on the coolish side during the winter months, but certainly not unbearable. Good size for lap swimming and our teen kids like to use the diving board. My only gripe is this: The pool hours are posted as 9 AM to 5:30 PM (weekdays) but they choose random hours to close for lunch! One day it's 12:40 to 2:00 PM, and the next day it might be 1:40 to 3:00 PM. They simply put up a sign at the entrance gate stating "Pool closed for lunch from ..." We're used to the laid back approach to business hours here in Hawaii, but a public pool should have regular, posted hours for any breaks in their daily schedule, IMO. Interesting side note: Even though the pool is a public space, it is against regulations to take photos there. Lifeguards will chastise you even for clicking a quick selfie.

This pool is huge and perfect for laps and their are aerobics classes during the week. Also wonderful kiddie pool for mothers and kids to get out of the house for outdoor recreation and sun!👌

My kids and I have been to this pool more times than I can count. My son is 15 and has always played in the deep end. This is the first time we have been back since the lava closed it for many months. A female lifeguard made him do the "swim test" as they call it. He is made to do it EVERY single visit, and has "passed" every time until now. The lifeguard said he did not pass (again, mind you he has taken this "swim test" at least 40-50 times in his lifetime and has always passed with flying colors), and is not allowed in the deep end. No explanation, just no. Seriously? It's bad enough that we can't have floaties, face masks, laugh, play, splash or have any fun at all. You are expected to stand in the water stoically and not move! Gee, what fun!!! With this same lifeguard, my son and his dad got in trouble for chasing one another in the pool and tagging each other. Again, nobody was in the area they were in and they were not splashing. Even so, we wouldn't want anyone to get wet, after all it is a pool! I have left this pool 5 stars in the past, and never thought we would be treated so unfairly. The pool in Hilo has always been great, as I have never encountered any problems there. If you have kids, I recommended driving the extra 30 minutes to the Hilo pool where there isn't this undue nonsense. The Pahoa pool is great for people doing water exercise or swimming laps only.

This place is a public pool with a kiddie area and large pool that services everyone. It also has hot showers and a locker room for changing into swim wear. A fun place for all the family

It is simply amazing that this tiny town has such amenities. An olympic size pool with lockers showers and free. Rain or shine this is a wonderful athletic retreat.

Pahoa pool is a hidden gem! It is clean, rarely crowded. The lifeguards are friendly. The locker rooms are adequate. Best of all, to me, is the perfect water temperature! Not too cold, but not too warm. There are plenty of lap lanes for serious swimmers, a very large shallow end, a diving board, and baby's wading pool. Also, it's free! No ID or anything needed to enjoy this pool.

We swim there at least 5x a week. Water temp is perfect and it's always clean. Plenty of times and lanes for lap swim. Highly recommend it if you want to do some laps. They also have water aerobics 3x weekly in the mornings if that is of interest.

now I'm guessing we are talking about the pahoa pool which is an awesome amenity in town. what a surprise to gina an olympic size swimming pool in a town with a population of 750! opens at 9am every day. there are water aerobics classes mon., wed., fri. mornings and long lap(full length of the pool) swimming midday. the pool is clean and well maintained by bill kennedy and well staffed with great lifeguards headed up by casandra. possible longer hours during the summer months. this is a 'no fee' pool.

We swim at the Pahoa Pool several times a week and it is always a wonderful experience. The lifeguards are friendly and professional, the water temperature is heavenly and it's rarely crowded. Best of all, it's free and it's open 7 days a week, except for holidays and maintenance days. If you're visiting for the first time, it's helpful to check the schedule before arriving. You can either call the pool office or check the Hawaii County website (select "aquatics" under "parks and recreation"). Currently, the pool is open all day Monday through Friday, but on weekends the operating hours are shorter and the pool is closed during lunchtime.
