Our guide on this tour was very knowledgeable and quickly answered my questions. The house itself was beautiful and represented how the family lived during that time. All artifacts were from that era and not replicas. The wallpaper is newer but hand made using blocks and it was all incredible! The plaster trim was so intricate and obviously done by master craftsmen. The rooms in the front were more elaborate because those showcased for customers to order the way they want their homes built by Mr. Davenport. The photos show their daughter's profile cut out & then the actual basket she carried & more!!

Tickets for tours of the Davenport House Museum can be purchased in the gift shop (which used to be a pharmacy) at 323 East Broughton Street: $15/adult, $12/senior, military, or students ages 18-21, and $10/student ages 6-17 (5 and under are free). The Davenport House is where, in 1955, Savannah’s historic preservation campaign began with 7 women who blocked the planned demolition of this 1820 Federal style house so that the land could be turned into a parking lot.

It had been several years since we were last here visiting the Davenport House Musuem. They have significantly expanded their knowledge and research and reporting on the enslaved people who live here. Those stories are well told and should not be missed. Sarah Davenport was a widow for nearly 42 raising 7 children> it was a struggle. This home was first to be saved by the preservation society-it had been slated for demolition.

From the outside, the house seems quite simple, but inside will wow you with pieces of furniture and art within the structure. The distinct details in each room should take you some time to see them all. The tour weaves a tale of what daily life was like and as well as the history.

We were very fortunate to be on the tour where George was the guide. George was an architect and therefore had the foundation to explain the significant architectural features of this beautiful 1820’s structure. If you are lucky enough to be staying at the beautiful Kehoe B & B, it is nextdoor. Keep in mind the Davenport is closed on Sunday and Monday, so plan accordingly. Don’t miss it!

This was one the most informative and interesting historical home tours I have ever taken. It may be that the docent that guided the tour, George, being a retired architect really got
Into the subject matter and it showed. It also is a great place to start if you are interested in touring historic Savannah homes as this is the house that started it all and you get a lot of background on the Historic Preservation movement in Savannah.

My wife & I chose to visit Davenport House during our stay in Savannah for the primary purpose of learning about both the free and the enslaved people who occupied the property in the early 1820s. Instead the half-hour whirlwind guided tour all but ignored the stories of the Isaiah Davenport Family's "below stairs" servants & was overloaded with architectural and building preservation-related commentary. In the defense of the Historic Savannah Foundation, they had just recently completed & unveiled to the local media their restoration of the lower floor spaces where the slaves lived so that area was still omitted from the tour. But our tour group guide had us spend more time outside the home than inside, further diminishing the value of our tour. I hope they consider adding at least another 15 minutes to their future guided tours, to include the living/working spaces of those enslaved by The Davenports and to expand their educational mission beyond its current Mission goal to "interpret the American Federal-style house, and the artifacts within, built by master builder Isaiah Davenport for his household with an emphasis on the years 1820-27."

The guided tour was a learning experience. The house itself is so unique in so many of Davenport's designs. So glad it was saved from destruction.

Hi, is it hard to hear docent giving the tour since they are required to wear masks right now? Thanks!

I would say, on an average between 30 to 45 minutes. It is not a huge house, and the timing would depend on who was assigned to you as the tour guide and how much information they are able to share. They also have a small and quaint gift store for you to browse thru after the tour.

Is this scheduled tours or can you just walk through on your own at anytime?

The DH is open Monday through Saturday - 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with tours every half hour. The last tour begins at 4 p.m.
On Sundays the schedule is 1 to 4 p.m. - last tour beginning at 4 p.m.
Usually visitors are added on the next available tour. There is a six minute video shown before most tours as well as exhibits and the garden to see (gift shop) too - if there is a wait.
