July 7th, 2024 - My son, daughter and a family friend saw a man drown! The whirlpool is called the “toilet bowl”. The man jumped in and didn’t resurface! Sad and most traumatic experience for all! Be so careful and pass this on to family and friends.

This place is amazing! The views are spectacular. Definitely worth the drive in...with a Jeep it took about 45 minutes from the Camp Verde entrance. Lots of washboarding.
April to October you need a permit due to the limited number of parking spaces.

too many people. definitely feels like a public place. I feel like the permitting on this area should be more strict and less accommodations should be made for visitors. Areas like this here in the US are too often spoiled by insipid crowds of careless people.

i went a while back but this place is a must if you are going to arizona. it is so beautiful and the water is so clear. as a person who grew up here i love it so much. you can camp here but you would want to check because in some months you have to pay and it others you don’t. BUT THE ROAD IS VERY DANGEROUS SO DRIVE WITH CAUTION. but this is a must

It's beautiful all year long. Be warned that you need a permit from April 1st to October 1st, just be smart and get it the morning of the first day of the previous month.

We heard how amazing it is here, but traveling 17 miles and a NOT maintained road was not fun. Everyone should know that the 17 miles should require Trucks and SUVs for sure. Also know that going into fossil creek requires a pass that you can only get a month in advance.
With all that said, the creek and the hike were lots of fun. The water was clear and the hike was fairly easy. Lot 1 was the closest to the waterfall. Closest does not mean close though. Atleast a mile and a half hike. If I were to do this again, I would stay near lot 4 (first lot you get to) and enjoy the water there. Just as nice. Many want to hike to the waterfall and many jump from there.

We talked to some locals, and we’re able to find this awesome hike to the waterfall today. The 14 mile drive into the fossil bridge was doable in our rental car. We really enjoyed the clear waters, spotting chub fish, and even saw a pack javelinas.
Check the weather. It was closed last week due to having 20+ in of snow randomly!

Must have reservations to park in advance. Open right now four days a week. Road closed from Strawberry only open from Camp Verde. After October 1 no advance permit required. Great river.

Trail is easy and well kept. Hike up the road 1/4 mile to trailhead on left. The road in was graded and well maintained. There were sections that were rough but nothing your vehicle can't handle if you go to trailhead like this often.
Get a permit if you're going in the summer.

This place is simply gorgeous! Make sure you take an SUV. The drive to the trail is REAL bumpy. I think the drive was 13 miles. Then the hike is another mile. Depending on the parking lot you are assigned. Bring plenty of water. We were well prepared with cooling towels, bug bracelets, and camelback backpacks! It’s a pretty hike with multiple places to swim on the way to the waterfall. You must get a permit. You can buy them up to a month in advance. This hike was well worth taking.

Hey! I'm having alot of trouble getting a permit for the Dixon Lewis lot for fossil creek. We have kids so we are trying to get the closest parking lot to the falls. When I go on at the time advised (3 days before the day you need and at 11am eastern time 8am Arizona time) to purchase the permit for this parking lot nothing becomes available. has anyone else had trouble purchasing a permit for this area? Worst case scenario I was able to obtain a Tonto parking area permit, does anyone know how far the walk is to the Dixon parking lot, and is it doable with small kids.
Thank You!

Can someone describe the actual short trail from the lot to the falls? My mother (70 years old) is coming to visit and really wants to visit the falls. How strenuous is the hike? We have a pass for lot 1, is the hike far from there? Any guidance and information is more than appreciated. Please let me know of any concerns. TIA!!

Can a one of those fold up wagons make it down the waterfall trail?
Rédigé le 18 août 2019
Any wagon or medium to large coolers on wheels is a task because of the amount of small boulders along the trail. we saw some people having to carry their coolers over obstacles. Its possible, but I suggest packing one or two backpacks full to get what you need to the waterfall. Also safer as your hands now free to hold your walking stick and use other to balance or catch yourself.

I couldn’t find a separate post for this but Camp Verde Hot springs. Anyone familiar with it ? and how long the walk across the water to get to the spring will take? Is it something you can drive through or have to walk? Or any other way to get to the springs and avoid that water all together?
