We stopped by before heading to the airport to stretch our legs a bit. The area is quite nice with quite a few beaches sprawled along the coast. The parking along Anzac Parade wasn't too bad, but it was almost full even though it was a Monday afternoon.
You cross a bridge to get the island which was quite interesting. The island itself was closed off and gated. It looks to only be open on Sundays. There is a set of stairs to the left of the gate which leads to the rocks around the island. We ended up just walking along the rock outside the island. The rockpools had plenty of things to see. You aren't able to walk around the entire island though since there is a section which has a fairly large drop. We were lucky that the tide wasn't too high so we were able to walk around. There were nice views of the surrounding area from the island.
It was a nice place to explore for a bit especially if the sun is out just to enjoy the weather,

I loved my visit to Bare Island…it was a sunny but cold day but I was still able to get some great photos and a video. A great place for locals and tourists to visit.
They have tours of Bare Island on Sundays and they recommend you book in advance if possible..very reasonable priced.
The island is connected by a foot bridge to La Perouse. The fortress as built way back in 1885 to protect Botany Bay from invasion.
I have not yet done the tour of the island but I will do…the tour includes walking through the fort and tunnels.
Parking is free at La Perouse and although sometimes crowded I have always found a parking spot. Coffee and food just a short stroll away.
Every time I have been there there are lots of people fishing…apparently they do well.
Definitely worth a visit.

Once a fortification, then a War Veterans Home, the fort on Bare Island is now a listed historical site. It is open on Sundays for tours. There is a gate into the facility, however, there is a set of stairs on the left side of the bridge for those who want to do some rock fishing or have a walk a little further.

Its a nice place to go and spend half an hour watching the birds and checking out the sea urchins. Hardly any people and on good days you can circumnavigate the island - but on most days it is downright unsafe. You can walk partially around it for a nice walk and experience a lot of waves spray your face!

Not recommended for tourists on a clock but if you have time on a morning, why not :)

The view from the carpark is pretty good but walking around the island the rock formations are beautiful. An easy walk across the bridge and a few steps to the rocks below. Toilets available near he carpark.

Unable to visit on the day as it was only open to pre booked parties and overall opening hours are limited. Check before you go. Looks interesting from the coatal walk.

Drive past Kingsford, past the old goal, and further again past the cemetary, until you reach the end of the road.....you'll be rewarded with a view from the northern mouth of Botany Bay....to the right you'll see Kurnell with the oil storage tanks and container yards in the distance, but on the left......the magnificent Pacific.
Stroll down the path to the wooden bridge...sometimes it get VERY windy...bring a hoodie or beanie...or at least a scarf...it was blowing a gale there when I visited.
Cross the bridge and down the stairs on the left....If it's low tide, you can clamber around the island...the weathered sandstone is marvellous, great walls have been carved out by wind and rain.
During high tide, scuba schools frequent this spot, as the rock shelves make easy access to the deeper waters.
Ample parking and a very large grassed area adjacent is perfect for picnics, but choose your days, as the wind could blow your sandwiches away!

Unfortunately the curse of Instagram has spoiled what would be a very scenic place. I went during a weekday evening and sadly came across Instagrammers (apparently sitting on the bridge is a 'thing'), wedding photographers and family photographers. All on a weekday evening with fading light, not exactly what you'd call photographer-friendly conditions.

There isn't much to do on the outside of a Sunday as you can't go inside the fort, and only walk around the island. So if you want to go, I'd suggest going in the morning when the social media junkies are still asleep.

Bare Island on winter is one of a kind. The place is solitary, find your own corner to appreciate life. On weekends, tourists crawl all over the place.
