Normally too crowded and too warm in the summer, the fall foliage makes the bike trip great in the fall, and certainly less boring. An easy trail, well maintained and easy to do with any bike. Limited attractions on the course

Over 12 years ago I cycled the Trail end-to-end for the first time. With the aid of a new bike, I have recently cycled segments of the trail and found each very enjoyable. The trail skirts around one of Ontario's best butter tart outlets in Belwood. It is worth the half kilometre side track to visit this store.
The former railway trail is hard pack stone dust and is a joy to cycle

We went on a bike tour of the area and had a nice time looking over the gorge and admiring the river and dams along the way.

We parked very close to 680 Gartshore Rd. in Fergus where there is a decent sized parking lot and clean port-a-potty, then rode to Belwood Lake - that was really only 25 minutes each way with a comfortable pace. The trail is clean, flat and easy to ride. No big rocks or tree roots sticking out. That said you are surrounded by tree's so it is still pretty. Would definitely ride it again and maybe try a different part of it - maybe start at Belwood Lake and go beyond that.

Beautiful for biking and hiking in the summer. Gage your trip as it is a long hike with few places to stop for food or facilities. Unfortunately it is taken over in the winter by snowmobiles and it is noisy and smelly. Some users as not very courteous to walkers and their pets. Be careful. Also nice for horse riders.

Elora is such a pretty town we decided to drive 1 hr to ride the Elora Cataract Trailway. We parked close to the Vistor Centre in Elora (great washrooms and water bottlefiller) and rode a couple of blocks to the trailhead. The section from Elora to Fergus is mostly shaded except the last bit. As a rail trail it is level, going through wooded land midst farms. I had hoped for waterviews along the river but there were none. In Fergus you must use GPS, have a map, or get help from locals as the signage on streets was not adequate. Choose the Hill St. route to see plaqued houses from the 1800s. At Belwood Lake there are public washrooms and shaded picnic tables for a mid-morning snack. We rode on past km marker 16 and then turned around.
The trail is hard packed (after July heat) and easy to ride. It is about 20% shaded after Fergus. The trail was not too busy on a hot, July Saturday morning.
It was pleasant but unremarkable. The route along the Grand River at Paris is much more interesting. Elora Cataract Trailway is a great trail for locals but we wouldn't drive there to ride it.
We loved just being out, but the best part of the trip was an amazing latte at Cafe Serenity, Elora, overlooking the river.

I road this trail from end to end and return, It is not too busy, flat and a prettyy good surface. My only complaint about this trail is the signage is very poor at the west end of the trail (Elora). Signs were in many cases on the opposite side of the road, not great if your a cyclist.

Living in Elora, we use the trail on a regular basis. Love biking from Elora to Fergus and Elora to Bellwood Lake. Biking the latter we do have to use the road to reconnect to the trail way. Love the stops along the way by the river. Good to see so many people using the trail, walking, biking, running and in the winter skiing.

I’ve hiked and biked this trail many times and in all types of weather. It is wide with hard-packed gravel and is 47 kms long. So you can make your workout as short or as long as you like it. The trail passes through lots of farms, meadows, and forests.
Two of my fondest memories of this trail include a very wet and cold hike on a spring day that forced us hikers to seek refuge in the toilet building of Belwood Conservation Area and a hike one winter when the trail was frozen and we were all slipping and sliding. Good days!!!

Brilliant trail for outdoor activities, great walking connection between Fergus and Elora, I walk my dog here and use it to cycle to work. Its an old railway line so goes for miles. Brilliant for long distance cycling.

Its not ideal for road bikes as you will be riding on gravel, unless you have cross trail tires on your bike like the continental travel contact you might suffer punctures. If you do have something strong with a Kevlar reinforcement you should be ok as it is pretty flat and without potholes.
