We spent the day at Hansen Bay Beach and it was beautiful. There is a free parking lot and easy access to the beach. You are expected to make a donation for the upkeep of the beach property (cash can be placed in the blue wooden box). You will be greeted by the owners or their family members ( as well as chickens, goats and a few cats). The owners will offer use of kayaks, beach chairs, cabana tents, for a small fee. Of course you can bring your own chairs and coolers. Be sure to bring your water shoes. You will definitely need them as you walk into the water, since it is very rocky. The snorkeling was amazing, especially on the left side along the rocks. We saw 3 octopuses and a large lobster. The coral reefs were beautiful and there were a lot of fish to see. We enjoyed our time there and will definitely plan to visit again. Thank you for sharing this privately owned beach with us!

Our first time going to Hanson. Walking into the water there's lots of stones/rocks, and this was the one day we didn't bring water shoes. (We haven't needed them at any other beach, even beaches that also had stones). I'd heard so much about good snorkeling but I saw very little. The free lounge chairs are in bad shape, most have rope keeping the backs from laying flat so you can't adjust the angles of how you want to sit. The palms are nice for shade. Since my family couldn't enjoy playing in the water due to the stones we didn't stay long. At least we got to stop by Skinny Legs on the way back so the day wasn't a total loss.

This will be the 5th time my wife and I have been visiting Saint John, so much so that the last time we visited we invested in property. We decided to invite our best friends with our family this last trip and they fell in love with the island which is no surprise. My wife decided to try Hansen Bay Beach based on the great reviews. We decided to get up extra early to be one of the first guest there. We ended up being the first guest and was met by a very nice gentleman named Caleb (Unsure of spelling) who explained the entire set up for our visit. After hearing his very kind and professional spill, he pointed to two very nice Cabanas next to each other which was perfect for us and our best friends. After paying 20 dollars each and making a generous donation, we started placing our things on the tables where a lady was laying down on her phone. Caleb stated they were just there until guest started arriving and we were fine to start getting situated. It became very uncomfortable when the lady was not moving from our Cabana that we were told to go to and continued her conversation on her phone. She was very, very , very rude and snapped at our guest who was switching beach chairs for better ones. After my guest were told they couldn't switch any chairs they decided to go to the cabana that had better chairs. This rude lady told them they cannot move from the cabana they were at even though there were no other guests on the property. After receiving such rude comments from this lady I inquired if she was Talia because I had heard such great reviews about her. She advised me she was not, and that she was irritated that we were putting our property on the cabana when she was on the phone. I advised her that was the cabana we were told to go to and she stated we had an attitude. I would have never gone to that cabana if the gentleman had not stated we could go there. This made our stay there very uncomfortable and I was very displeased based on the reiews. We decided to stay there for a little while and the children decided not to swim because of the situation. We decided to just take a loss of our purchase and generous donations and go to a different beach. Once again, Caleb was very professional and kind but the lady that he was with was very, very unprofessional and rude to where it ruined our morning. My friend told me that she RUDELY told her that this is her sanctuary and we are just on vacation so go do your thing. We will never ever go there based on this lady personally, but I would not suggest people not to try it because I don't think this was the norm based on the great reviews.

After more than 20 years visiting St. John, we managed to get just a bit further than Haulover Beach to Hansen Bay Beach. There we met Thalia - family owned beach she has opened up to the public. She operates on the "donation" system. Pay whatever you think you should for parking right next to the beach and using her facilities. She does rent cabana type shelters on the beach, complete with lounge chairs for $20 for the entire day! She has paddle boards, kayaks, and other beach toys that are available for your use.
We had been reading for quite awhile about how good the snorkeling was. We swam to the area recommended by Thalia all the way out to and around Pelican Rocks. We hit a bad day - not many fish but the coral seemed to be in better shape than many of the reefs around St. John. We swam for over any hour and returned to the comfort of our cabana. It is a buggy spring and there were no shortages of no-see-ums but a layer of insect repellent helped keep them at bay. Having the quiet of this beach was wonderful - no crowds but there were other people. I would say this is a great place to bring your kids for the day. They can meet their pet goat and chase chickens on the beach. This is a beach worthy of a return visit.

We really love a private, quiet, friendly, caring experience when traveling, and we certainly found all that and more at Hansen Bay Beach. During a gorgeous mountainous drive from our Coral Bay rental house, we took in so many drop-dead vistas in our 4WD Jeep. We wound past homes tucked next to the road and took our time meandering around all the goats, chickens, and roosters. After we drove around the two huge trees in the road, we easily found Hansen Bay Beach's sandy parking lot and were greeted by Thalia, the friendly, knowledgable, enthusiastic steward of the land.
The beach was well-maintained with lovely palm trees swaying over brightly-painted picnic tables. There were all sorts of beach equipment available as well as a clean portapotty. The calm, clear waters held views of lovely shades of turquoise. We had packed our own picnic lunch and beverages to enjoy along the shore. We had no problem slipping cash into the donation box in thanks to the family for sharing their slice of paradise. Thalia was a joy to chat with - she is named for the Greek mythological goddess of comedy and "brings beauty and happiness to the world" (as various websites mentioned). These two newly-retired Coloradans wish her health and happiness for many years to come!

One of our favorite beaches ! East end location so about 40 minute drive from downtown. Donations accepted to help maintain the beach. We got to snorkel with sea turtles as we spent the day lounging under palm trees ! Be sure to bring a cooler and snacks. Options for renting kayaks etc are available as well as very clean port-o-potties. Highly recommend as it is away from more congested and touristy areas!

Read all the reviews and decided to try this, directly after our Brown Bay Trail hike. It really was lovely. Parked right under a perfect palm tree and had the best shade we've had so far, at any of the beaches... no one hassled us for money but they did ask for a donation as we walked in - after that, no problem.
There were more people than I would've thought at this end of the island, but still a nice quiet spot and worth visiting, for sure.

Hi , We are staying in the east end for the month, of Feb.. We rescued a little pooch 10lb, from
Puerto Rico last august, she is sweet, in fact , she has passed her training as a therapy dog and now visits kids and elderly in care facilities.
I have heard that your beach allows dogs, I am inquiring if that is correct,,she is not much. of a swimmer but would love to just sit in her basket and enjoy the sun, we are from New England the cold weather has been quite a change for her.
Thanks,
Phyllis Adams

what are the round brown balls, that looks like donkey poop, floating under the water at Hansen beach?

Is this beach access gated or can you arrive before the 9am opening time this page shows?
Rédigé le 26 juillet 2021
It was not gated in May 2021. I think that you can arrive prior to 9am, and they will ask for a donation when they open.

I am contemplating a family vacation to the US Virgin Islands a big priority is close if not beachfront access to calm white sandy swimming. I’m struggling to find information about if that is something readily available in the Virgin Islands. We have a disabled daughter and want her to be able to enjoy the beach. Does anyone know if any of the islands are conducive to that
Rédigé le 18 janvier 2019
St.john has a couple of beaches that are disabled access, but the walking terrain of the island due to the hilly nature of the place would not make St.John my 1st choice

Greetings, Why are dogs permitted to roam (and defecate) on the beach. I thought dogs were not permitted on V. I. Beaches? Thank you.

Thank you for your inquiry, Hansen Bay Beach is a privately owned family beach, access to it, other than public access, is on private property, it is not National Park. Those pet owners that use the beach should be well informed by now regarding the rules and regulations for having a Pet on the beach. If for some reason there was an instance where a mishap occurred, it will be addressed and resolved. I hope this answers your question and your Hansen Bay Beach visit was otherwise pleasureable.
