A very wonderful experience visiting these Candy Cane mountains. A distance of about 85 kms away from Baku. Really love the experience. We eight couples visited these colourful mountains on 09/09/2024 .
The location of these mountains were about 85 kms away from our Hotel in Baku. Spent half an hour there. The more hours go up these mountains, the more colourful they are .Lots of photos were taken there.

One of Azerbaijan’s most beautiful stretches of road leads for about 40 kilometres from the Guba-Baku highway west towards the mountain village of Altiaghaj. Roughly mid-way between the two one passes through a dramatic valley flanked by rolling shale mountains whose astonishing red, orange, pink and chalk-coloured swirls led British travel writer Mark Elliott (author of the very popular 'Azerbaijan' guidebook) to dub them the Candy Cane Mountains, a name that’s stuck with travellers ever since. The astonishing colours are said to be due to groundwater that’s altered the oxidation state of iron compounds within the rock.
Great sight. Great time spent.

Spoiler Alert: The place is not as scenic and beautiful as you see on various social media platforms, but it is surely a great place to visit and experience in Azerbaijan.

The Candy Cane Mountains are a stunning natural wonder that truly live up to their name. These mountains are characterized by their striking red and white striped appearance, which resembles the classic holiday candy cane. The vibrant hues of the Candy Cane Mountains are a photographer's dream. The unique geological formations and the contrasting colors make for breathtaking views and excellent photo opportunities.
Many tours offer a comprehensive experience, often combining visits to other nearby attractions like the Shahdag Mountain Resort and the ancient site of Beshbarmag. The tours typically include comfortable transportation from Baku, making it easy for visitors to reach the mountains. Some tours even offer pick-up and drop-off services from your hotel.
Depending on the tour, you might also get to enjoy various activities such as hiking, photography, and even some adventurous pursuits at the Shahdag Mountain Resort. This makes the trip suitable for both nature lovers and adventure seekers.
The combination of natural beauty, cultural insights, and well-planned itineraries ensures a memorable experience here.

Приехав сюда, ощущаешь себя как на другой планете. Непередаваемая красота и тишина, и отсутсвие людей.

I had a weekend spare and my good friend, an expatriate long-term resident of Baku, suggested that we take a drive to the country-side. We set out around 11am on a Sunday, and headed north-west to the Candy Cane Mountains. The main road was a sort-of-a-highway (under repair for most of the way due to overladen trucks) taking us to the industrial waste-land of Sumqayit. The highway ran past railway lines and depots which had accumulated hundreds of rusted wagons. Such a change from the beauty of Baku. After about an hour or so we took a left turn and journeyed inland to some rolling hills. All of a sudden we came across the Candy Cane Mountains. The mountains (well, really small hills) are made of shale, but have an almost rainbow look about them, with a colourful stripe effect. If you chance to walk over the hills you can find small fossilized leaves and invertebrates.
Afterwards, we motored on towards the provincial capital of Xizi where a town sprouts out of nowhere. The town appears to be untouched. Once you drive through Xizi there appears to be some tourism facilities, but very difficult to know what they are or do, as signage is negligible. We took another left turn and before we new it we were climbing very rapidly. The landscape turned from barren desert to wonderful mountain forest, made even more beautiful by the early autumn changing of leaves. We reached a gap in the mountains at about 2,100m, and then turned around at what appeared to be a hunting lodge. The road was signposted to make travellers aware of bears, very big snakes, and deer. We then travelled back the way we came (as we did not have a GPS and could not find another route back to Baku). If we had more time, or even a long weekend, I can imagine a decent road trip throughout Azerbaijan could be quite interesting.
I arrived back at my hotel around 5pm, and was very pleased that on my 6th trip to Baku, I had at last had a day outside of the capital.
