In a 2 hour long walk you can enjoy the extinct volcano (and walk into its crater), the emerald lake and the basalt columns. An amazing experience deep into nature, definitely suggested!

The inactive Racos volcano looks more like a canyon nowadays.
From distance it looks like a hill covered by vegetation but the slopes that go inside the former crater are covered in red sand and pebble. The striking contrast between the green vegetation and the red slopes is amazing.
We visited the site in March 2024 and were lucky to find the area open for tourists. Usually, the access to Racos volcano is restricted, as the area is used by movie producers to shoot various scenes involving men riding horses in a dramatic landscape.

To see the crater I recommend leaving your car in the first car park you come across after paying (20 lei adults, 15 lei students). The crater is the result of volcanic activity that took place in the Eastern Carpathians 10,000 years ago.
Gorgeous colors ranging from red of various shades to lava black. The vegetation that has managed to develop inside the chasm leaves you amazed.
Then it is best to get back in the car and go to the other car park to see the emerald lake on the right and the basalt columns on the left. Alternatively you can park in the last car park and to reach the volcano take a nice walk around the lake for half an hour.
The 10-15 meter high basalt columns that formed a million years ago.
The turquoise lake instead was formed in a former basalt quarry.
To visit the entire complex calmly it takes about 1 and a half to 2 hours. In the last parking lot there are 2 chemical toilets, which however close at a certain time. At 6pm they were already closed.

entrance ticket is 20 RON, and this allows you to visit 4 sites
3 within the geological complex
- Racos Volcano
- Emerald Lake
- Basalt Column
and 1 about 5 min drive away, the Sukosd-Bethlen Castle.
it will take a min of 2 hours to do all. i think the experience is fine, but can be skipped if there are higher priority activities

When it rains it’s not that great beacuse ut’s kind of muddy but all in all it was a nice expetience. You will not see many signs on the road but it’s easy to find, you just have to follow the road.

The small village of Racos, half-way between Brasov and Sighisoara, is well-known in Romania for its geological importance. The crater of a volcano that last erupted thousands of years ago and the nearby basalt columns attract many travelers curious to discover a landscape that seems to come from another world.
To see what remains from the former crater you need to pass first through the village of Racos. Its history goes back to the end of the 14th century, and the oldest testimony of its past are the ruins of the medieval castle Sukosd-Bethlen. Although partially restored, the castle can be visited with the help of a local who lives right across from the monument.

It’s a nice place to visit for couples, families. We had a nice walk trough the basalt mine, the smaragd lake and near to the canyon. All this takes 2 hours, with great landscapes. We met a guide, she was nice and explained us a bit about the history of this mine and colcanic place.
