Hello,
We only have a short time in Gruyeres, so we will not have time to see the inside of the castle, however, can we just walk the grounds or do we need a ticket for that?
Thanks!
Hi Christina,
In the reviews on tripadvisor, there is sometimes a confusion between the castle and the fortfied city of Gruyères. Walking into the city is totally free and really nice. You can see, among others, fortified walls, the central place of Gruyères, the facade of the "Chalamala" house and the church.
To visit the Castle, you will need an entrance ticket that gives you access to a 20 minutes long movie, the historical collections, the temporary exhibitions, the panoramic esplanade, the ramparts and the gardens (during spring and summer). The visit takes from 45 minutes (if you skip some explanations and don't go everywhere) to 2 hours if you want to see everything.
If you don't have much time, you can walk around the castle as Deirdre suggested. This will give you a nice point of view on the surrounding landscape and take around ten minutes if you go slowly and take pictures.
Afterwards, if you want a drink, you could try the Giger bar which is an amazing place but I wouldn't recommend it with kids (there is no entrance fee but they expect you to consume something if you want to get in).
To visit Gruyères, I would recommend to plan at least 2 hours, even if you don't enter any museum. That place is so nice and peaceful that everything you do is slower!
Best regards,
Patrick
Very little at the Castle is accessible without a ticket except for a small lookout terrace, however, there is a path that goes around the perimeter of the castle which offers amazing views. When you approach the castle, the entrance gate is to your right. Go left instead and follow the path, it will take you around the exterior of the castle wall along the cliff. Breathtaking!
U only need a ticket to walk inside the castle. The rest of it is kind of a marketplace with little shops and eateries with an open air stone walkway the middle with some fountains
Yes, in summer you can walk around the castle through the garden, it in winter it's closed. Also you can anyway admire the castle from outside and the town itself is super cute and pretty :) But next time come for longer, the castle is absolutely worth visiting from inside!
Hallo,
Yes, you can just go and walk around in the little village on the hill. The big cheese show is at the bottom, close to station ... too many people, too much stress. Just go up to the castle, enjoy a meal or a drink, walk around, entrance is free. Have FUN!
Yes, you can walk around it for no fee.
Both the parking and the outside if the castle are free of charge, so you can easily spend some time there without paying a dime. Prepare some money for the goodies you will find into the shops. Enjoy! You should also go to visit Cailler chocolate factory.
There are a bunch of shops and a couple of taverns leading up to the H.R. Giger museum, even a chocolate factory. It's free access all the way up to the ticket counter inside the castle wall. There's a couple of pathways outside the castle and a couple of beautiful vistas along with it. There's some things to see and do without actually going inside the castle.
I'm so sorry !! I just saw this - since we had a tour, I am not sure if you can just see the grounds. It would be worth emailing them and asking. The entire little town is adorable!!! Do't miss going there!!!
