This one is a tough call. Outside the capital, there are very few hotels in the Faroes. There is a bit of a very simple looking one in Klaksvik and another that bus tours use in Gjogv, but not a lot else unless you look for AirB&B type arrangements. That is, except for Hotel Nord such as it is although it isn’t a normal hotel. I’ll get back to that. Pros: Vidareidi is beautifully situated among dramatic mountains and cliffs and the sea in a green valley. Once you get used to the tight two tunnels that you must pass thru to get there, it makes a good base to explore the northern islands of the Faroes. The Hotel Nord rooms are renovated in the last couple of years and ours (the deluxe mini suite I guess in Room 215) was comfortable enough and clean. Everything worked although the little fridge hummed and froze things a bit. The dinner of lamb (you must order this dish ahead early in the day) was authentic, hearty, and tasty and served by the nicest lady who is just wonderful. She seems to work at the hotel part time to serve dinner in the evenings. Cons: the Hotel is a bit of a work in progress (I’m being kind here) and we actually thought it was shuttered for business when we arrived. As my photos attached to this review show, the outside is full of weeds in the parking area, the entry patio has pavers out of place and missing all over, and there is literally junk piled next to the hotel in various places like an old Astro turf looking tarp. A mysterious food cart/truck lies dormant in the seemingly abandoned side parking area. The lobby is unlit and no one staffs the desk. Your room key is left on the counter on a piece of paper with your name on it and room number. Housekeeping is odd. One day the towels were changed in our room while we were out but the beds were left unmade. The next day there was no housekeeping at all. One might expect more for US $400 per night which seemed a lot even by Faroe Island standards. Overall, the owner seemed to be in the midst of a dozen projects inside and outside ranging from barely started to 90% complete, but there is also a chance they had been abandoned. It was like a ghost town the three days we were there except for the nice dinner lady, the lady who set out the simple but ok breakfast, and the housekeeper who we saw once upon arrival in a hallway. We did cross paths with a few other guests. This is a super strange place to stay. So bottom line is this: most of the Faroes can easily be explored for the better part of a week if one is based in Torshavn. The driving distances are really not very long to anywhere and the hotels are modern and full service. For 1-2 nights though, it might be convenient and nice to shorten the drives to the furthest reaches of the Faroes while exploring the north eastern islands. If that is something you would like, the Hotel Nord is ok as a base since options are so limited. We thought it was nicer than the Klaksvik option. But set your expectations appropriately so as not to be surprised when you arrive there.

1. aften fik vi fish and chips.

I sought shelter from the elements here while waiting for my bus back to Klaksvík. Unfortunately lunch wasn’t available but I could at least have a couple of beers and a packet of crisps. The lady serving was very pleasant, and the toilets and Wifi both proved very useful.

Hotel Nord has been in business more than 40 years. I stayed there a long time ago, but never forgot the experience. Viðareiði is magical, and the massive Atlantic cliffs, the highest in Europe, are an easy hike from the hotel.
