We booked Pucara Tambo because we knew it would give us a true experience of the local indigenous everyday life. While it is built and organized for tourists, we were happy that we stayed there for one night, despite the cold weather that made it a little challenging. The place is at the top of a hill in a very cute village, with a fantastic view on Riobamba and the volcanos around (including Chimborazo on one corner). The huts are all facing a small central cobble stoned "avenida" surrounded by nature (they have a very nice herbal garden, native flowers everywhere and a free lama and alpaca roaming around) and and two main communal buildings: one displaying some local traditions artifacts and the history of the community, and the other one hosting the small restaurants and the "Cinema Andino" (where we watched a video filmed in the indigenous language after dinner). The room was quite spacious and clean, even though we suffered the cold because the small heater wasn't enough to heat the entire hut for the freezing 6 degrees max of the summer there at 3200 mts! The kind manager helped us by providing us with with another heater and very warm blankets, so in the end was fine... but be prepared! The dishes they cooked for us for dinner were simple but delicious and overall we were very pleased with the experience!…
Great view overlooking and dominating the Riobamba valley, over 3300 meters above sea level, spectacular views of the mighty snowy Chimborazo, smokey Tungurahua, and jagged El Altar. Premium service at great value. Breakfast included. Located in Cacha, the Pucara Tambo Lodge is community run and well worth the 15 minute upslope ride. Cacha is historic and its people are warm and welcoming. I fully recommend this lodge because one can readily see the benefits. They run a museum, several gardens and craft shop full of hand woven beauties, including the iconic Cacha poncho.
