Excellent host. Great food. Best view. Visited for an afternoon lunch. Enjoyed the host/owner. Got to learn a lot about the area and all the activities. Our tourguide from Norpalm knew the area very well and took us to this gem of a place. I will certainly go back there.

Francis and his team have created a small paradise on a fantastic beach next to Butre village. We stayed at the Afro Beach for 2 nights and had a pleasant and relaxing time. From the first welcome to checkout everything was great and Francis and the whole team care about the guests very personally and individually. The room was spacious and clean and a nice bathroom with shower. The restaurant offers good international and local options for affordable prices. The complimentary breakfast is good and the best moment was sipping a good coffee (french press) in the morning and watching the waves and fisherman on their boats and enjoying the peaceful environment. The beach views and walking the beach to the sunset is just breathtaking. A short walk to visit Butre village with friendly people and kids playing, many colorful fisher-boats and a wooden bridge which is an adventure itself ;) Medaase and will will be back!

Butre beach is a lovely, secluded spot of pristine beach next to a small fishing village. There are a few lodges and places to eat, but it is less touristy than neighbouring Busua (which you can trek to, taking around 45 mins). People are friendly and the area felt safe. The waves make swimming here a little perilous (it’s easier to swim at Busua), but watching the local fishermen take their nets in and out each day makes up for it. Afro Beach itself is well-run and friendly, and has a small number of nice, clean rooms that are well-protected from the occasional mosquito. Decent food and drinks are served throughout the day, and there a couple of neighbouring lodges you can eat at too (including Zion Lodge which has a small beachfront bar run by the friendly Elias). Although there’s not loads to do here, it is a perfect chill out spot. We extended our stay by an extra night. Unless you’ve got your own transport, getting here is the main challenge. The owner, Francis, offers lifts from Takoradi and can arrange a taxi. We came by public transport from Accra, however. It was a fun if lengthy adventure. In case helpful, this is how we made the journey… In Accra we took a taxi to Kaneshie market. Quite chaotic but people are helpful. Ask for the air conditioned minibus (eg a Stanbic) to Takoradi. They leave from the main road near to the pedestrian bridge across the main road, rather than in the bus station itself. Cost 80c. If you’ve lots of luggage you could ask to buy a second seat for it. Our minibus filled quickly and left within ten mins. Journey to Takoradi took about 4-4.5 hours. Stopped once on request for a toilet break, but don’t assume it’ll stop much. In Takoradi there is construction work on a big new flyover just before the ordinary end place. We got out at the large Shoprite mall. The mall itself has a few decent, if expensive, fast food places and some good toilets, as well as the large supermarket itself. We picked up an ordinary (no air con) trotro to Agona around where we got off the minibus. This one took longer to fill, maybe 30 mins. It cost 10c each. The journey took around an hour. The driver/passengers assumed we were going to Busua, so be clear you’re going to Butre (pronounced Boo-tra). We got off at the final stop in a market place, and someone showed us to the trotro to Butre at the far side. You’ll need to ask as it’s not well signed, and give them the name of the resort/hotel to check it’s the right trotro. It took around 40mins for our trotro to fill. The road is full of potholes so takes a while, around an hour. Butre is the final stop. Once off, take a left turn and you’ll find the rickety footbridge over the river. It’s about 15 mins walk from there, on the beach or the path just up from it (rather than the ‘road’ itself). Someone elected to show us the way, which was helpful as it was getting dark. It could be a bit challenging to do this without a guide if you arrive after dark. All in, it took us around 8 hours to get from the minibus stop in Accra to the lodge, but it was an adventure, everyone was friendly and helpful, and it never felt unsafe.

Afro Beach is a small new hotel directly on the beach in the middle of a huge, well-tended garden property. Quiet, scenic, clean and varied environment with many excursion options. The buildings are massive, of high quality and like European standards. Everything is well thought out and works. My cozy room, bathroom and common areas were very clean. There are mosquito screens on the doors and windows. The bed was huge with a high quality comfortable mattress and an ocean view. You can hear the waves and the different voices of the birds. The wide sandy beach was completely clean and really idyllic with the palm trees. The breakfast was plentiful and tasty. There is a large selection of cool drinks in the hotel's bar. Francis the owner was a perfect host. I got fresh caught fish from barbecue and an excellent dinner with fresh vegetables. At the reception you could borrow various board and card games, body boards, a football and goals. In the nearby village Butre you can buy everyday necessities and some groceries. From there a Trotro also goes to Agona. I really enjoyed my stay at Afro Beach and I recommend it unreservedly.
