I booked this place for afternoon tea to celebrate my friends hen party, from looking at the website pictures/Instagram tags and from a recommendation we had from a friend, the 4 of us were very excited to eat here. The Resturant area that we first got taken into to have our afternoon tea, the floor was filthy there was a painter and decorator man in the Resturant right where our table was. We spoke to the kind young waiter and said we wasn’t happy with where we was sat, at this point we where the only people in the whole dining area. The waiter said we could go to the Libary area upstairs to have our afternoon tea instead so we made our way up there, to then see dirty mugs on tables, old balloons on the floor used glasses of drink just left on the book shelf’s, basically it looked like there was a party the night before and no one could be bothered to tidy it up. Again we where to only people in this area of the hotel, it was dead for a Sunday afternoon. But from what we experienced here we now know why it was dead. The afternoon tea was brought to us and well it was unappealing to the eye straight away. Online they show the afternoon tea being very picturesque. Well what we received was 2 dry breaded finger sandwiches each and a soggy vegetable wrap, not forgetting the hard scones and dry pastries or whatever they were. As soon as the waiter left us with the food we all looked at each-other, like ??? This is nothing like what we was expecting…… After being given the food I would say about 20 minutes later a manger came over, it was like she knew we was going to complain, that’s exactly what we did. We said how bad everything was, and basically we wasn’t paying for anything because of it being so horrific, she could see we had barley touched any of the food. The manager had the cheek to ask us even though we had complained, if we wanted a takeaway box to take anything with us?? Of course we declined the offer and basically left the building. Honestly the most awful experience ever. This place needs serious attention, and the website needs updating with actual up to date photos or what they offer, not the afternoon tea they used to offer but no longer do. Also they need to seriously learn what an afternoon tea should be like other than dry sandwiches, hard scones and pathetic shop bought pastry things. Basically stay away…. :-)…
This hotel is really conveniently located near the station and within walking distance of the city center. The decor is beautiful. HOWEVER, my $143 pullover did not get to leave with me. I have emailed the hotel many many times to ask if they have found it and I have telephoned and contacted a different Clayton hotel to ask them to contact the Cambridge hotel but I have had no response. In my last email I stated that if I didn't get a response I would leave write this review on Trip Adviser, as I think it's only fair to warn other people thinking of staying here. Frankly I feel that my clothes were stolen and no one at this hotel cares.
The Clayton hotel is such a lovely place to stay, near and handy to the train station it’s perfect. Stayed here for the weekend and so glad we did from excellent rooms to a super breakfast in the morning. Would stay here again no problem Staff friendly hotel very clean If you want to stay in Cambridge I can’t recommend this place enough Well done to you all. Hopefully see you again in the future
My stay at the Clayton hotel was extremely disappointing. Mainly because of the lack of what I received for the package I paid for. Please understand that I’m not the kind of person that stays in upmarket hotels very often and this was something that was meant to be extremely special for my partners birthday. I did a lot of research before booking as I wanted it to be perfect for her. I chose the celebration package as it just added a few things extra. But I must say I was massively disappointed. For one, when I walked into the room, I saw 3 pathetic balloons waiting on the table. Honestly looking at your website (I have attached a photo for reference) this is what I was expecting and to turn up for find 3 cheap looking balloons I was very much disappointed. You went to the length to ask me what colours I would desire, to which I asked for black and gold, I was greeted by white and gold. I know this may not seem much to yourselves but this was a large sum of money for me to spend and I’m so so so disappointed. The balloons had all gone down by this morning meaning that we could not bring them away with us. The cake we received was dry and we struggled to eat it. The only nice thing was the Prosecco. Please find attached what I was expecting. Unfortunately due to the sheer embarrassment of what I saw, I do not have any photos of what was in the room waiting for us. Unfortunately I do not think I will be looking to book into one of your hotels again due to what we received for the price I paid. It was a comfortable bed and to be honest, that’s the best thing I could comment on…
We booked through secret escapes for a two night. Booking was easy and kept up to date. However, it’s asks for you to book your breakfast online. Link didn’t work so attempted call direct. Line always engaged. So followed with an email with request asking for latest time with the timescales offered. On first morning we arrived just before 10 am as per booking and was told the buffet was being cleared and they were closing. Why book us at 10am when the restaurant closes? We managed to quickly get some food, but not as leisurely as we had would of hoped for. Following day we went earlier and there was not much left, sausages not browned enough, and most of food was cold with little choice left. Going back to check in, the guy on reception was unenthusiastic and without any smiles. We asked where parking was and given the station parking. It’s a rip off. They charge you £12.50 a day (24hours) from 4am. So regardless of the time you park, you pay 12.50 for that day upto 3.59 am the following day. The 24hours doesn’t start from the to time you arrive and end when you leave. It’s within that timeframe period meaning you pay for two days for a 24 hour period. So if you arrive at 10am and leave at 9am the following day you pay for two days parking. We were also told our room was not ready but no offer to check our bags in. We had to ask. We parked along the street less than a minute away 9-5pm then free. Far cheaper than the station rip off. Overall the hotel was very clean. Comfy bed. Good shower (no bath) hot water and plenty of storage. It’s a couple of minutes walk from the station, but a good 20-30 minutes walk into the main hub of Cambridge. We found none of the employees particularly friendly or warm. None made eye contact or said good morning/afternoon. Was not given any details about where to find lifts, restaurant, gym. Or asked the purpose of our trip and if we wanted help getting around etc. It was shame because had they, it would of really made us feel good about staying at this hotel.. we felt it lacked the personal touch. Would I stay again? For cleanliness yes, location no, and made to feel welcome no.. we could of stayed i a premier inn and received more.. glad we didn’t pay full price for what we received.…
