The owner and caretaker were very nice and accomodating to our questions...a very simple house that will give you a sense of being one of the people of baler...just a boat ride that will cost you Php5 to go to the sabang beach if you want to go surfing though you can also do it infront of the house...it is beachfront so you can also swim if you want or just a walk for soul searching...we feel safe with the place...will surely come next time...

Budget-friendly beach front accomodation that makes you feel like you’re home. Hearing the beach waves and smelling the breeze made us feel very relaxed. Warm welcome from the owner and the caretaker really takes good care of you and your stay. Nothing fancy at this accomodation, but really worth your stay. Will definitely be back. ❤️

ASJ is just a typical backpackers house right in front of the famous Sabang Beach of Baler. The place is in (literally) the community of fisher folks and surfers. You are in the place where the locals do what they do everyday, so spending your vacation here is also like spending "community immersion". Your neighborhood is a typical provincial neighborhood in the Philippines- close-knit, hospitable, and friendly.
The rooms are very basic but large compared to the usual 2 pax room accommodations. There were several pillows as well- im really happy with that. It is clean (thanks to the very hardworking caretaker Ate Ems). Our room has its own CR which is also clean and water has good pressure. we rented the room at a very affordable rate. Seriously- it is very affordable! There is a common area outside the room, and there is kitchen outside where you can cook anything and use the utensils and kitchen wares without extra cost!
The best experience here is that you will have a beach front view of the sea and would be near the perfect spot to surf. We have observed several surfers walk to this beach front from several meters away just to be on this perfect spot where waves are really awesome for surfers. And since you are right in the community, buying stuff are way cheaper...
At first, this area might feel unsafe, but believe me it is a very safe place to stay. The neighborhood is awesome. I just wish that the local Barangay do regular clean-up in the beach front esp where the boats are docked, it gets a bit dirty.
Overall I am very satisfied on our stay in this place and will surely choose this Backpackers place when I go back to Baler!

If you're in a budget well this is definitely a place you should check in!! The room was really cold and the ambiance was just like you're a resident of the province. I was there last month and all of them are just so friendly.. it was just like getting home from family! We were actually lost when we were suppose to leave to Manila but the kind owner even drove his car to lead us to the way out! HE IS THE BEST!!! Give this a chance-- you might be disappointed at first while you approach the area but youll have a better experience here rather than spending it a Hotel where you only help the rich get richer!!! Like seriously! Support small businesses like this! P.S It's not that BAD for the price!!!

This review is overdue (sorry, JJ!), but I could not wait any longer to share my excellent experience with ASJ Backpackers!
I sent their FB page a message asking for accommodation details, and the management promptly replied. We then moved to sending texts and they had been very helpful and accommodating throughout. The owner, JJ, had arranged for my booking himself by coordinating with the hostel's caretaker. He even arranged for me to explore Baler town on a day tour with one of the hostel's neighbors who owns a tricycle. While on the way aboard a bus, he made sure I was safe and gave me tips on places to go and to eat. The staff, Joseph, is a quiet man but friendly in his own way. Although we arranged for him to teach me how to surf (it was my first time), he had an injury while surfing but promptly recommended a friend of his who is one of the best instructors in town. I chose to cook my own food and Joseph helped me prepare the meals. He and my friendly tricycle driver, Blaine, even drove me to the bus terminal when it was time to leave.
Now, the hostel. It was established by a backpacker for fellow backpackers, in particular the ones who are not iffy about accommodation and price. It is a small establishment by the seawall in a neighborhood away from Sabang Beach itself. To get to the beach, one must either take a 2-minute boat ride for 5 pesos (during high tide) or walk across the river (during low tide). Another option is to take a tricycle to the other side, but this costs 15 pesos and takes longer.
The hostel has both fan and AC rooms, which may be small or big depending on what anyone may be used to. My small room was big enough for a solo traveler like me. It had a double bed and a big industrial fan. The mornings were also cool because of the sea breeze, so I really didn't need an AC dorm. The fan rooms face the beach, while the AC rooms face the neighboring houses. There is a small kitchen that guests can use if they want to cook their own food. Toilet is very basic; it has no flush, but there is a shower, a bucket, and a dipper at the guests' disposal. Again, this is intended for people who are used to very basic accommodation and understand that this is value for money. Despite all of its basic offerings, I had the best sleep of my entire life! No joke!
I would come back to stay at ASJ again. JJ even offered me to hitch a ride with him next time I visit Baler. His friendliness is a reflection of how friendly the town of Baler and its people are, and I definitely had a great time.
