Stopped by for a picture. I've included a picture taken between 5:30 and 6 PM. I just assumed it was closed and was headed on to Kingman for the night. I've also included a picture that I call "Life in the Vast Lane" looking back east just prior to arriving here. My blog was staying with a rock and roll theme when driving, so that's a nod the The Eagles "Life in the Fast Lane". The one picture I saw posted here looks like the sign has been restored (a bit anyway). Mine is looking in a different direction so they may have only restored one side of the sign. This motel was listed in some of the books as a place to see. It also mentioned a restored neon sign. If I'm right, you won't have the horrifying experiences earlier posters described!

Just like "horror horror" we stayed there and are still horrified by the experience.Filthy, dirty and disgusting. The mattress blood splattered, the gaping door bottom , the towel stuck in the broken window, the trickling shower and the tile floor so scummy we wore shoes in the shower. We slept with our clothes on waiting for dawn to escape this horrific place and the sullen rude staff. Should be condemned and we are sorry we did not write this long ago. Better to have slept in the car at the Havasu Canyon trailhead.

When we arrived at the Frontier Motel, we were bedraggled and exhausted from hiking back up from Havasu Falls and Supai Village. We were looking forward to resting our weary bodies between clean sheets and being engulfed by artificially cooled air. This was not to be. Our first clue should have been the list of amenities on their sign, which included colour TV. In addition, despite making reservations, management was not expecting us. The four of us ended up with a room with two single beds. We found the hotel to be stifling and uncomfortably dirty. There were spiders, both living and dead, infesting the room. There were also spider's webs in the corner. That night, horrified at the prospect of sleeping in such conditions, my sister curled up in the fetal position on the edge of the bed. Because of the traumatizing details of our stay at the Frontier Motel, it has become a family fond family memory, and a story to tell people who think they've had a bad motel experience. All anyone in the family has to do is mention "colour TV" as an amenity, or the Frontier Motel, and we all chuckle. In all seriousness, while the conditions of the motel may be appalling to most Americans, in many places in the world it would be considered luxurious. I think this experience simply made us more thankful for the "amenities" we usually expect and receive, and has given us something to laugh about.

I am writing this review several months after staying at the Frontier Motel. I thought this would be best forgotten but recently recounted our experience to a friend and realized others need to hear it too. We arrived late at the Frontier Motel the night before beginning the hike down to Havasupai. While the choices in this area are limited we felt comfortable that the motel would be a basic but nice place to stay based on the generally favorable reviews we read online. Unfortunately, past reviewers perception of the place may have been obscured by nostalgia. The motel is a 1960's vintage and I think that was the last time it was cleaned too. Everything was coated with a thick layer of dust and grime. Granted, it's the desert but seriously, they couldn't use a damp cloth on the tabletops or vacuum the ancient and quite disgusting shag carpet? The bedspread and blanket were tattered and its cleanliness suspect. We stripped them off before going to bed and even then we were leery of the sheets. We didn't even want to think about the mattress. The AC did nothing. The shower had almost no water pressure. Everything, including us when we checked out the next morning, was permeated with a sickly, tangy, smoky odor that even the windows-open, wind-blowing drive to the Havasupai trailhead couldn't get rid of. Our knocks at the office door to see if we could change rooms -- hoping that ours was the exception -- went unanswered. Awful. Horrible. Deplorable. These are words that are not included in the TripAdvisor checkboxes but should be for this hovel.
