My wife and I stayed two nights as part of a major road trip. The Pines is, indeed, set among ponderosa pines in a residential area about 20 miles from Bend -- quiet and attractive. Checkin and checkout were friendly, quick, and easy. The one-bedroom unit had plenty of space, was clean, comfortable, and in good repair. The buildings appear to be multiplexes -- with eight units in our building, each of which has direct access to outside. The only criticism I have relates to engineering: The waste plumbing is not acoustically insulated, so the sound of someone upstairs flushing the toilet is exceptionally loud in the downstairs unit. That's especially shocking in the middle of the night! Otherwise, a very comfortable stay.
We stayed here in September 2020 for 9 days. In the midst of stay changed pool rules without informing existing guests. Then allowed new check ins to reserve pool an hour at a time so no one else could use even if didn't use it during hour (which they generally didn't). No warning message just changed policy screwing existing guests. Plus we saw them barge in on a guest without knocking who was furious. Didn't deliver refresh they promised either. Horrible horrible horrible. This place used to be amazing to stay at...dont know what happened?
My first inclination in reviewing The Pines was to 1-star it and say it was horrible, just so that I wouldn’t be hurting my odds of competing for a place to stay there again in the future. In truth, the place was great and I feel like an idiot for not staying there before, since I’ve been coming to Sunriver since I was a kid. We stayed in a one-bedroom loft room which was perfect for our family. The beds were comfy (even the Murphy), the view of the golf course was nice, and the jet tub was amazing! The room was immaculately clean, and check-in/check-out employees were exceptional friendly and helpful. Seasonally, The Pines offer two free bike rentals for your stay, with additional bikes at $5 each. The pool and hot tub were perfect for cooling off, which brings me to my one gripe: no air conditioning in the room. Fans help, and letting cool air in at night to trap during the day eases the heat, but be prepared to be warm on hot summer days (unless you’re out enjoying activities anyway). We started planning a winter trip immediately, and we plan to use The Pines as our home base from which to ski at Mt Bachelor. The best part? Extremely reasonable rates for the quality offered. I’d stay here over and over in the future.…
