Diamond in the Rough
I hesitate to write this as I want to keep Lidskjalf to myself. I can't explain how amazing this place is in every way that will do it justice. Beginning with the pleasant and responsive communication from the property manager, Bianca. She's a treasure and very helpful. If you've ever taken a taxi from the airport to Red Hook Terminal, you know it can be a wild ride. Bianca helped us with a private taxi and our driver was so wonderful and I'll never go back to a public taxi again. The property is secluded but easy to find. It's literally up a driveway from Francis Bay. And the other side is Mary Creek. There is no direction to look where you don't feel like you have the whole island to yourself. Peace, tranquility, nature in her glory. The main house and two separate bungalows were clean and comfortable. All had a/c and spectacular views from private decks. As a family, we loved the open floor plan of the main house. There is a huge kitchen island to gather around and prepare meals. Beds were comfortable and extra linens provided. I'll outline the features/amenities for ease of reading. -washer and dryer -dishwasher -refrigerator/freezer -stove/oven -television in every room with direct tv -huge outdoor seating areas and dining table -hot water -snorkel equipment, beach chairs, floats, coolers -beach towels -flashlights and extra batteries for rare power outage -iron and ironing board, steamer -vacuum and cleaning supplies -beautiful yard with walking paths and plenty of flora and fauna -tissues provided to wipe your tears when you're leaving Things to consider: -Not handicapped accessible due to stairs -Tap water is cistern and not potable (we had no problems buying water at the local markets) -I would highly suggest renting a vehicle if you need to make trips into town Tripadvisor won't let me post more than 10 photos so understand that there is so much more than what I can show you. And sorry my photos are screenshots of video I took.

Wonderful vacation rental
My wife and I stayed here for a much needed vacation with a couple good friends. We were very pleased with how beautiful everything was, especially the view from the giant deck. There’s a gorgeous lookout over the water from basically every room of the house(s)... there are 3 separate “apartments”, perfect for groups or larger families. The kitchen is quite large and fun for hanging out in, with a big fridge a large island. The wireless internet worked well which was nice as cell service can be spotty. Linda (who was the property manager), was very kind and friendly, and met us at the Starfish Market once we arrived. I recommend hitting up the market beforehand to load up with groceries for your stay. There are several comfortable places to eat and relax out on the deck. The location is terrific as well, literally right up the road from Francis Bay where there are fun hiking paths. My wife and I walked along a pretty boardwalk built through the trees right off the beach, and past ruins that are cool to see. It is a very short drive to Maho Beach which was my favorite beach on the island. We never had any issues with parking there and the snorkeling is amazing, seeing sea turtles and many types of fish. It is probably a 15 minute to both Cruz Bay and Canal Bay, where there are many good places to eat. Some of our personal favorites were Rhum Lines, Lime In, and the smoothie hut on the way to Cruz Bay. Also, the floating taco bar (Lime Out) at Hudson Bay is really fun and worth checking out. The only issue we encountered on the trip was that the power went out twice, not just at the home but all over the island, but this was taken care of quickly and Linda was very helpful in keeping us posted. All in all, we were extremely pleased with the beautiful location, comfy beds, proximity to the best beaches, and being directly in-between the two towns for night excursions. I highly recommend this vacation rental!

Nature-lovers paradise, perfect for families or couples (3)
There are so many wonderful things about this house; here are just a handful: 1. The view & the porch are spectacular. After a morning of snorkeling, it was the perfect place to have lunch and watch the pelicans. Sunrises were fabulous, greeted by morning breezes and visitors like a regular hummingbird. There is ample, comfortable (fall-asleep comfortable) seating including in shade or partial shade. There is a gas grill and long outside dining table, too. 2. The house beautifully combines bedroom privacy with spacious common areas. There are really three separate "houses," each with its own bed and bath, and the main house has the addition of the kitchen/living space. Two of the bedrooms are on the top level and then one is a lower level. You have to walk outside to get from one to the other. This is great for three couples or families of older children. The downstairs bedroom wouldn't work well for smaller kids and upstairs you'd need a monitor to hear between bedrooms. For our family with teens, this set-up was perfect. 3. You're a stone's throw from some of the best sites on the island: Francis Bay (turtles), Waterlemon Cay (best snorkeling variety), and Maho (more turtles!). The driveway is right next to the Francis Bay entrance. It's probably a ten min walk to get onto the beach; we drove the 2 min to spend every ounce of energy on more snorkeling and bring gear. We never had a problem finding parking early. It's an easy stroll for an afternoon quick cool-off. Waterlemon is close, but you will probably want to drive. You've got a mile or so hike just out to the site then a swim where the current can be strong. Weatherunderground was great for telling us wind direction each day. 4. The kitchen & bedrooms had everything we needed. We did a fair amount of cooking and had everything we needed from pans to utensils to storage containers. The bedrooms each have their own TVs and AC units (set desired temp), but most importantly they have good bug screens! I am the person in the family who gets all the mosquito bites, so I was grateful that the house did a good job keeping the mosquitoes out. I've stayed in places in Peter Bay without any screens and awoken to a mosquito swarm, so it was a real pleasure to have no such issues at this house. 5. You feel completely nested in nature. We had birds regularly visiting on the porch (friendly opportunists; don't leave a plate), a tree frog on one of the chairs one night, a deer drinking water that had pooled on the porch, tiny adorable lizards all around the rocks, and an iguana pausing to pose on the driveway. A walk around reminds you of the power of nature, too. The villas on either side were taken down by the hurricanes. The owners of Lidskjalf decided to make the investment and rebuild. Reward them for doing so; you'll be glad you did! For those staying at the house, so things I'd wish I'd known: - There are ample towels (6 beach towels, plus lots of extra shower towels) - There are inside showers but also one outside shower. All worked well. - The washer/dryer work well but get eco-detergent; it empties in the yard (ok, yes, good idea regardless!) - Heed the warning that you cannot leave food out or you will suddenly have a swarm of Caribbean mini-ants. - There was a drip coffee maker (basket) that does NOT have an auto shut off. So you need to make sure to turn off the pot. - There are about 6 beach chairs and three good sized coolers and it looked like someone left some kid of a tent (but we always found shade at the beaches and didn't need the tent we brought) - The internet was reliable for us but our cell phones (verizon) picked up BVI (international), so we stayed in airplane mode. We used Whatapp for local calls (no local phone line), which were a little choppy, but worked for dinner reservations. - If you use Whatapp, remember to change your location to specify Lidskjalf for 911 source identification (and should you need after hours ER care: the clinic on Centerline road is open and has a doc on call) - We had Starfish Market provide provisions (so our refrigerator was stocked when we arrived), which was nice. But their selection online was much more limited than the store. And Starfish in Cruz Bay was the closest thing on the island to a home market (e.g., having options like no-sugar peanut butter, ben&jerry's) and worth a trip in the beginning of your stay. - Maybe everyone already knows this, but I didn't: You can leave what you don't use in the refrigerator. - If you like birds, bring binoculars or a scope for bird watching. You'll see a number of birds from the porch, and you are also right near the salt pond at Francis (Nat'l Park has a Francis bird tour Fri AM). Enjoy!

Amazing holiday house with the best views
Stayed for 1 week at this quiet and beautiful location. We were 4 adults and 2 kids. Had the best days at the deck with stunning views and sunrise in the bay overlooking British virgin islands. Had a barbecue on the deck and sipped cocktails while the kids played outside in the inflatable pool. Clean, tidy and had all you need. Friendly staff and great reception for WiFi 5 min to Francis Bay where sea turtels popped up every 5 minutes and you could snorkel with them. Apparently they also nest in the area. Picture perfect beach. Only recommendations for owner is to put a 3. Lower wooden board/cover for protection around the otdoor decks as smaller kids could fall deep down. Many places this 3. Wooden board was all ready in place but not at the lounge/seating area. My best recomandations

House needs some TLC!
We stayed here for our holiday break with our 3 boys (24,21 & 16). I will start with the positive and say that the location is beautiful and very quiet. Located right next to one of the prettiest beaches. We have visited the island of St. John for 7 years and have stayed in remote homes so we are familiar with the island. Guests must know that there will be zero internet access. You will be told "they are working on it" but we never had access and never heard back from the rental company. The other 6 times we have rented homes on the island (in remote areas and the same time of year) we have never had that problem. Also, home is tired and needs a new paint job, new screens, rusty nails hanging off the outside deck, light fixtures need be scrubbed, etc. Also, the "4th bathroom" is not workable. It was filfty and not sure why it is advertised as 4. The least impressive was the rental company. We had to reach out to them but had a diffiuclt time hearing back because the owner was in Chicago and our contact was running around with no cell service. When we finally connected the answer was "we are working on it".

Good but not great
Lidskjalf at Annaberg is a quirky rental house on St. Johns. It is secluded and very private which also means it is a 20-25 minute drive over twisty roads to the nearest stores or restaurants. So be prepared and shop before you arrive. You need to provide everything you intend to consume ranging from bottled water to salt & pepper. We received conflicting information about the water supply and after a bout with stomach issues switched to bottled water. Also beware that although the property advertises internet access, we had none for our entire stay. That made accessing all of the attractions and restaurants I had previously bookmarked at home problematic. Adding to the communications problems, the phone landline was also out the entire week and cell service is spotty and potentially catastrophically expensive. The only signals my Verizon iPhone picked up were from the neighboring island which turns out to be a “foreign” country; the British Virgin Islands. If your cell plan does not include roaming for the BVI you could be looking at huge bill. The house itself was adequate albeit the holes in the screens allowed viscous little biting creatures entry at will. The good news is that you are just a 10-minute walk from the nicest beach on St. Johns; Francis Bay. Our experience wasn’t terrible but it could have been much better with just a bit more attention to living up to their advertising claims.

After we left Lidskjalf for the last time in order to fly home, I looked at my wife and said, "This was the best vacation I've ever had." She agreed. First things first, the entire staff at St. John Properties(who handle the bookings) were kind, extremely helpful and professional. They have a concierge! Who made absolutely wonderful recommendations. We had a greeter who met us at the rental car office and drove us to the house, showed us all the amenities, gave us more recommendations that were also great. Thank you Andretti, Nellie, Tonya and BJ. You made us feel right at home. Now for the nuts and bolts: The house is one of the most secluded locations on the island which is exactly what we wanted. It probably has one of the most beautiful, affordable views on St. John. The place is furnished and decorated with class and comfort..... Inside and out. We spent every bit of the day on the deck watching hummingbirds and bananaquits come and go, the Pelicans dive bombing fish in sleepy Mary creek, sailboats going back and forth to Tortola and Waterlemon Cay, and drinking Rum like rock stars. The house is only a 5 minute walk to Francis Bay where we went snorkeling our first day. We found the beach almost empty, and the snorkeling was wonderful. The house is situated right in between Coral Bay and Cruz Bay so it was never a long drive to either city. We hiked almost everyday we were there and it was never hard to find the trailhead. When we were leaving and BJ asked me what the house needed..... I was honestly stumped, I thought about this the entire 7 hour trip back home, then I thought of something..... A nicer pepper grinder in the kitchen. Thant is the only thing I could find to complain about it. Aside from that, Perfect Location Comfortable and clean bedding, indoor sofas and chairs and outdoor chairs and loungers Well appointed kitchen and grill Very helpful staff And affordable We are already planning our trip back next year, and this time we will bring the kids.

What a View!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. Getting up each morning to this view was totally super. Location was very central for St. John....about midway on the north side of the island. We could walk down the hill to Francis Beach and a very short drive to Annaberg made this a joy to stay here. With separate quarters, two or three couples can enjoy total privacy yet terrific common space with a million dollar view.
