Although this small fisherman’s cottage is really central, you do not get what you pay for. It is fit for Alice when she was 3 inches tall. We were aware the house was small but to say it sleeps 8 people is ridiculous. The “living area” is tiny and “patio” area has been made for tiny Alice. The photos above may have been taken 10 years ago because this is not what we got. I am saddened that I did not take more pictures of the house when we entered and so the photos I have attached are from a video walk through I did. I do not believe it is fair to say there are two toilet facilities. If you using the “out house” make sure and close the blinds in the living room because you must keep the door open to fit. I have attached a picture of how the outhouse looks compared to the photos above. The house was dusty, grimey and stank of cigarette smoke. Possibly because you cannot stand comfortably in the patio area without keeping the doors open. The upstairs bathroom, although quirky was dirty. I felt the need to shower with socks on. The tiles on the wall that met those on the floor were covered in mould and dirt. Most of the guests slept on the beds but did not use the sheets/ duvets provided as they were stained and I could not say I believed they were cleaned by a professional service. One set of sheets had a large green coloured stain (presumably toothpaste or lube). Another set looked like some oil as it made parts of the white sheet see through. As you can see from the photos, all of the beds plus the sofas downstairs had decorative cushions on them. We were advised by a “cleaning” staff member that they use them to prop open the doors when airing out the rooms. As I’m sure you can understand, to then put them on “clean” beds is extremely unhygienic. They were also filthy dirty! I can understand the decor given the theme and I may have high cleaning standards but this was not up to par by any stretch of the imagination. We contacted the host on our first night as the iron “when we finally found it” was damaged. It had no fuse and the plug was hanging off with exposed wires. It was tiny! Smaller than a travel iron and the ironing board was really made for Alice! That evening the above staff member brought us a replacement iron and bee wine glasses. He handled all of the glasses, inside and out before placing them in the cupboard. Covid is still a thing. When we left, we cleaned the house and left it cleaner than how it was when we entered. However, due to the 45 mile hour winds, the window in the top room knocked down a lamp. We were more than happy to replace this lamp but are being charged a ridiculous amount as coverage. The host although nice at the time, clearly did not take kindly to our honest review with the VRPO service and retaliated calling our guests fat. She also claimed that we threatened her with bad reviews which of course is an utter lie. We spent very little time in the house because of the size and dirt. Brighton is beautiful and I would 100% recommend visiting but it would be cheaper, cleaner and more welcoming to stay in the jury’s inn down the road. It was extremely disappointing.

This group of 6 ladies have been true to their threat to each leave a bad review of the cottage for being asked politely to cover the cost of a broken designer lamp, £90. This review and the review below are from the same particular group and are in stark contrast to all our other reviews so I hope that potential bookers will see the malice and take them with a pinch of salt. The cottage is lovely and charming and petitely proportioned as you would expect from a 500 year old fisherman's cottage however the ceilings are standard hight and we often host groups of up to 8 guests who understand the limitations of the space. Most guests are happy with the amazing central location and use the cottage as bolt-hole and place to lay their heads. There was indeed a broken plug on the iron which was not reported by the previous guests who broke it and was not spotted by the extremely busy cleaner working flat out in the crazy summer season. BUT this cleaner loves the property and works very hard with a heart and a half to make it sparkling clean and welcoming for our guests. He was straight down in the evening with a replacement iron for these guests as soon as it was reported. It is not true that I called any of them fat. They complained about the length of the beds (which are standard length) and declared that only 2 of them could sit on each 4 seater sofa so, baffled, I asked if they were particularly large people? I'm afraid that when I first reported the breakage to the lead guest she immediately took a defensive stance and declared that I shouldn't put nice things in there if I cared if they got broken. The nice things are there for the delight and joy of my guests and this breakage only occurred because the guests did not follow the house rules and left all the windows wide open on check-out. If I had been responsible for a significant breakage at a property I would certainly offer to pay for it. It is very sad for me that these people felt offended enough to try to ruin my small business, it's been hard enough through the pandemic. Hopefully the next reviews will show that this was not the general feeling or experience of most guests staying at Looking Glass Cottage.

Upon arrival which was contactless which is good in the current climate. Although decor is nice some some items are severely dated/worn. The pictures are certainly misleading and the actual cottage is not that big. (Try not to mention this as you will be called large by the owner). As you can see by the picture attached the intense cleaners she uses are clearly scamming her. The iron was a travel size iron and lacked the plug casing and a fuse, the owner had to be sent a picture of this as I am sure she believed we were lying and tripping balls. And this was after a game of hide and seek to find it in a colander under the sink. Me and the misses shared the double bedroom, now we are both 5ft 3’ and it was a squeeze (in height Jacqueline not width). There was an old Hoover under the bed that had more dust upon it than in the bag (must be a new type of hoover). The top sheet was clean and the duvet cover was too, but don’t look under, (no Jacqueline this is not in spite) but there was a greeny blue stain on the mattress protector, and I don’t know if the mattress is supposed to be that brown color but it does not look very nice. The location is good if you don’t mind listen to the pub music late at night. It is good music mind you and a good idea to get a few bevvys but don’t open the bathroom window, trying to pee whilst listening to drunk people sing Eminem is a new and strange experience. There was grime in the showers and to be honest you would get more pressure from cold callers than them showers. What was even more weirder was the complimentary toiletries. If you don’t mind them being used by previous occupants then go ahead. These same drunks like to knock on the door as they walk past to let you know they are venturing onwards after last orders, which is great for the guys downstairs to feel safe. Plus seeing them urinate and leaving odour de drunk is a must. Now a maintenance guy had to come out to replace the iron and look at a dodgy plug that made the lights flicker. He introduced himself then proceeded to sort the iron and look at the plug. He also took a picture of the glass cabinet, put some new wine glasses away and took another picture. The glasses had been held by him on the inside and still had the stickers on. Don’t worry dude though we dishwashered them for you and removed the stickers. He was really pleased to have a biscoff cupcake and wished the misses a happy birthday which was nice of him. Unfortunately in a total act of god the wind blew over a lamp, now be warned future guests it was agreed that it would be paid for and replicates were found on eBay 2 for £45. The owner has been on the mushrooms that the Cheshire Cat was on an took a payment of £90 though. Now the location is fabulous, parking s a nightmare but that’s what you get for a central location. I have actually spoke to friends and said it’s a good place to stay once to say you have stayed. That was until a review was left of vrbo. This woman loves her cottage (love it’s more like a maisonette) and rightly so but be prepared Jacqueline that not everyone will like it. Her response to a honest review was to say it was spiteful, call us large people and also say that putting honest reviews is threatening her. I have a video that shows the decor and size of the place (don’t forget to say that you need to be size 4 to go in the outside toilet and also you need the strength of hulk to open it from the inside [ask your maintenance guy to bring wd40]). Overall if your not spending loads of time in the cottage then go for it, it’s a quirky place to lay your head. Being that your in Brighton you should want to spend you day and night out as the place is amazing.

When I informed the lead guest that unfortunately there was shattered lamp on the bedroom floor after their check-out she replied that she felt she should not have to pay for it as it must have been the wind (they had left all the windows wide open). When I explained that they had agreed to close all the windows before leaving and that it was part of their responsibility of care for the property she got defensive and stated "If the lamp was that important to you, you shouldn't have left it in the house. There are similar lamps available from Ebay starting at £45. I don't expect to pay any more. There are 6 of us that will be reviewing your tired and cramped accommodation on Tripadvisor". Now why would she mention reviewing the property on Tripadvisor in the same breath as insisting she would not pay more than £45 for a replacement lamp...? As a small business owner with tight margins at the best of times I am never going to be rich from this enterprise. I usually suck up the cost of damages myself in the interests of keeping everyone happy but having been massively impacted by the pandemic restrictions and this being quite a large expense I did not feel financially able to on this occasion and therefore enforced the terms of the damage deposit, charging her the exact cost of the broken item.

This was the first time we visited Brighton and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Looking Glass Cottage lives up to its reputation it is gorgeous. It is well decorated with a lot of attention to detail. Everything you could possibly need is provided. We absolutely loved that we could step outside of the door and be in the centre of town. There are numerous good restaurants, staff are extremely friendly, and the food delivery service is brilliant. Our children were fully entertained with the beach, virtual reality game centre, laser games, funfair, arcades, sea-life centre and of course shopping. Jacqueline was the perfect host which was reassuring. Every query was dealt with efficiently. I would confidently say no one would be disappointed with their stay at this cottage.

I booked this cottage with friends and family for my Hen Party. It was perfect for an Alice in Wonderland Hen. Every part of the cottage has little quirky references to the story. The beds were very comfortable and there was plenty of space for six. We had eight stay, but it was a little bit of a squeeze as the two beds downstairs are on single sofas. The cooking facilities were much better than we expected bearing in mind the size of the cottage! There isn't too much room to prepare food, but all the restaurants and cafes are so close anyway it didn't matter. Jacqueline (owner) was wonderful in checking we arrived okay... especially when it snowed on our journey. Nice lady. The bathroom wet room is wonderful, although none of us wanted to share a shower it was lovely to have the space! Beautifully decorated. This is a wonderful place to stay. Highly recommended.

I recently stayed in this beautiful cottage for my hen do, with 7 friends. It was decorated beautifully with cute little Alice in Wonderland touches in every room, noticing more and more as you walk around. This really is in the heart of the lanes perfect for shopping, dining and clubs and bars. The lane that it is on does not fit a car, in fact only fits one person walking through at a time making carrying luggage difficult. The cottage was perfect for what we wanted however being right next to a bar, was very loud so not ideal for families with young children, also presumably drunk people were knocking on the door throughout the night. Luckily we were a rather short group of girls as this cottage is tiny, and although it sleeps 8, only 5 comfortably as 2 beds are downstairs on uncomfortable sofa pull outs with a lack of sheets and one of the bedrooms was so tiny it only fit a small double bed with three sides of it touching the wall so felt quite claustrophobic. As part of the package we had some beauty treatments; massages and manicures which was lovely. Would definitely recommend.

We were down in Brighton for a Hen do this weekend and I'm so glad we decided to stay here. The place is so pretty and well kept. The house is very compact but ideal for what we wanted. The bathroom is beautiful, there is a bonus outside loo which has the most amazing sink ever! and you even get a little outside space. The sofa beds are advertised as sleeping 1 each but you could fit 2 on each bed at a push. The rooms all have their own sinks which prevents the bathroom being too busy when everyone is going to bed...all in in a really lovely place to stay and so central!

Great, quirky little cottage in an amazing location. Early morning noise from next door pub, barrel delivery, emptying etc inevitable due to location didn't put us off, however may bother some. Complimentary earplugs a welcome respite. Lounge small but adequate, but would recommend not too large a party, otherwise you are tripping over one another! Perfect for a group of girls shopping or a few couples for a weekend partying. All in all a great little place and offers great value for money.

On holiday from Australia,we had four fabulous days at Looking Glass Cottage. We loved the charming and quirky Alice decor,in fact we visited Brighton just to stay there, and weren't disappointed. We liked that we could park our car and walk everywhere, great shopping in the lanes and practically next door to Jamie's Italian.Jaqueline was very sweet and helpful, especially when we locked our keys inside and had to drag her out on a rainy day!A real highlight of our UK trip

We rented this cottage after trying and failing to find a decent hotel for a family of 5 in Brighton and we are so pleased that we did. The cottage is in the centre of the lanes and all of the main Brighton attractions are an easy walk away - it was lovely to be able to walk to the shops and restaurants without worrying about the car and where to park. The cottage itself is very well appointed - lovely bedding, lots of pillows, great wifi (a must when travelling with teenagers!), tea and coffee provided etc., plus it was spotlessly clean on arrival. The owner was a pleasure to deal with, check in was so easy and our security deposit was returned within a couple of hours of our departure. We would definitely recommend this to anyone looking to stay in Brighton for a few days.
