My family stayed in Pine Cottage for one week from the 22nd August 2020. We had been in a bit of a pickle as my Grandmother was very ill and we were coming down from Scotland spend time with her at short notice. We had been unable to find an available cottage that would fit all of us and accept a dog. I put a plea on the Fishguard Facebook page and the owners of Pine Cottage saw the post and got in touch. As it was my Grandmother passed away before our week in the cottage, however we would not have been able to attend her funeral had it not been for Laura offering us Pine Cottage. At the time the cottage hadn't yet been advertised but Laura (the owner) went out of her way to help us and we will always be grateful. This is a testament to how nice the hosts of this cottage are.
We found the cottage to be very well laid out with plenty of space. It was very stylish and VERY comfortable. It was clean and smelled amazing!
There are two bedrooms, one with twin beds and one with a double bed. Bedding is provided. I had a solid week of sleeping very well. The mattress and pillows were super comfortable (to the point where I had to come home and buy myself new pillows as I realised how bad my own were!). My sister told me that the twin beds were just as good. There was plenty of storage space for unpacking. And the windows were functional, for warm nights.
There is a sofa bed in the living room which is suitable for two people. We did make use of this and my brother was comfortable enough.
The bedrooms are in the left hand 'wing' of the property, which was good when someone wanted an early night, but the rest of us sat up chatting until late.
In the middle of the cottage, in front of the main door, is the bathroom. Again, this was very clean, and very stylish. There is a lovely big bath, with a waterfall shower over the bath. The water pressure was good and the temperature was easy to control. Some toilet paper and liquid hand soap was provided, as were bathroom wipes to help keep the bathroom clean during the stay. A hand towel and floor mat was provided, as are bath towels generally. We brought our own towels during this stay, due to Covid-19.
As you go through to the right hand 'wing' of the cottage, the first room you come to is the dining room. The table and chairs accomodate 6 and the space was a good size - we didn't feel cramped at all. I came with a walker (I am disabled) and there is a large fireplace type area in the dining room - there is nothing in that space but I found it was large enough for me to park my walker. This was fantastic as it meant it wasn't in the way at all.
Just off the dining room is the kitchen. The kitchen is fully equipped and actually has some extra's that I wouldn't have expected. There is a dishwasher and washing machine - with dishwasher tablets and washing machine liquitabs provided. There is a full size fridge and freezer with plenty of space if you don't plan on eating out a lot. There is a toaster and kettle, with plenty of mugs. The cooker has 4 normal rings, plus a wok burner - we took advantage of this and what a difference it made. I'm envious that I don't have one at home now! There are plenty of pots and pans, baking trays and ceramic dishes for cooking lasagne etc. The kitchen is fully stocked with cutlery, crockery and any utensils that you think you might need. There are plenty of glasses for those wine nights. The kitchen also had a bar worktop and bar stools. In the far corner of the kitchen you will find other things you might need like a hoover, the recycling bags, sweeping brush etc.
There is a stable door in the kitchen leading to outside space. There is no real functional space out here however the hosts have managed to get a washing line out here which was very handy. Although at the time, there was no indoor drying space, I have suggested that a drying rack for inside the house for days when the weather is poor might be a good addition. We were relatively lucky with the weather however.
The living room is at the far right of the cottage. It has one 3-seater settee and one sofa bed (which is the same size as the 3-seater settee). I had a total Goldilocks moment when I sat on the sofa to the point where I am now waiting on the sofa's coming back in stock to order them for my house!! Soooooo comfortable! And I am very hard to please when it comes to a sofa. The living room was spacious, airy and light. The decor was lovely with a slight beachy theme. It had some lovely art work, and there is another stable door in the living room, leading to the front outside space. This was very nice, having the top door open during the warm weather. There is a lovely big TV in the living room, complete with access to Netflix! The cottage also has wi-fi and the connection is excellent. My sister had to 'work from home' for a couple of days during our stay and had no problems taking part in zoom meetings etc.
There is a garage attached to the property, at the rear. This isn't big enough for a car, but is big enough for bikes etc. We didn't make use of this ourselves on this stay.
There is some outside space to the front of the property, and the hosts have put a bistro table and chairs out there for dining during the warm weather. The outside space has been decorated very nicely, with blue stone chips, planters and hanging displays. These are faux flowers but look real and are gorgeous! I was very grateful for the fact that they are faux flowers as I am absolutely petrified of wasps!
Although the cottage accepts pets, the outside space isn't suitable for letting your furry friend out for a wee. However there are a couple of grassy areas very close by that are suitable. FYI take a torch for any late night/early morning wee-wee's as the street lights in Fishguard/Goodwick are switched off outright for about 7/8 hours. Beautiful for star gazing, not so great for trying to pick up little doggy 'parcels' ha ha.
The location of the cottage is absolutely faultless. There is on street parking. It is no more than 10 minutes walk/2 mins drive to the beach, the train station, Fishguard ferry port (ferry to Rosslare in 3.5hrs, twice a day) a Tesco Express, petrol station, a Spar and a couple of places to eat and drink. There is a bus stop right by the cottage which will take you to Fishguard town and beyond. Although the train line is in very close proximity to the cottage there are only 2 or 3 trains per day coming in to Fishguard and Goodwick Station, so you won't find the noise disruptive at all. There are numerous beautiful beaches, beautiful coastal trails, towns, places to visit and things to do within a short drive from the cottage. The area surrounding the cottage is quiet and peaceful, and the people we met around the cottage were lovely and welcoming.
While we stayed there we had a few neighbours come to speak to us to comment on how nice the cottage looked. I did explain that we didn't carry out the work ha ha, and that it was a holiday home but the neighbours were very impressed by the look of the cottage. Laura and Navid have done a beautiful job of renovating the property.
I hope I've helped to give you a good idea of the cottage, its set up and the surrounding areas. I genuinely can't say enough about this property. It is beautiful, very comfortable and cosy. This is the hosts first holiday property and they have done an amazing job, and have thought of everything. They are very keen to know if there is anything that can be improved upon and I think this shows that you will be in very good hands during your stay. Laura is very easy to contact if there is anything you need.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, as a family, we are very grateful to Laura and Navid for their help at a really difficult time, but that aside, we LOVED our stay and we'll definitely be back!
