La maison n'a qu'une seule chambre, mais une grande cuisine / salon, un couloir et une salle de bains à la fois douche et baignoire. My wife and I rented this house for the entire month of September, 2013. After one week we vacated the house September 7th, and spent two nights in a hotel in Turrialba before returning the key to the property manager. At the time we rented the house the rent was $20 per day or $300 per month. As I write this review it is September 12th. At this time the house is still rented to me and presumably vacant, but I will not return. The house was NOT really clean when we arrived. I swept the floors three times before the borrowed broom stopped picking up. Is it a Gated community? Well, there is a gate down by the road. I never saw it closed much less locked, and it offers no pretense of security. Although this house cannot be secured, the property manager, who lives just up the hill, has a very sophisticated alarm system and, we observed, carefully locks ALL of his doors. AT THE TIME WE WERE THERE, the house could not be secured. THERE WERE: No locks on some windows. Missing screens on many windows, while other screens were torn and loose. No sheets. No pillows. No blankets. (nights are cold) No cooking utensils. No dishes. No flatware. No TV. No DVD. No internet access. No phone. No a/c to speak of. (Days ARE hot…) No heat. (Nights are cold) No trash cans. (we bought some) No house cleaning equipment (not even a broom, etc.) We borrowed some of the missing items BUT were beholding for that loan. The property manager loaned us some bedding, flatware, assorted dishes and kitchen ware. Two skillets and a one quart saucepan with no lid constitute ALL the cookware, not enough to cook a decent meal with. Sheets were borrowed but there were No blankets and after suffering a very cold night the borrowed kitchen table cloth was promoted to blanket status. Plus, we also used our jackets as bed cover. Don’t drink the tap water. One of Costa Rica’s advantages over much of Central and South America is the fact that almost everywhere one travels there is access to clean, pure tap water… but not here. Water from the tap must be filtered before drinking, with a GOOD filter. Do NOT drink or rinse your mouth with unfiltered tap water. Basic, western style house... 1 bed, 1 bath, 1,000 sq.ft. +- Location, location, location. Its altitude/location is NOT high enough to have cool days. Our days there were VERY hot while nights were very cold. From the house to Tres Equis where you get onto Highway 10, we drove eighteen minutes, 4.8Km, in a 4x4 using first gear only, on a steep, winding road constructed mainly of large stones and pot holes. Tres Equis, is a very small village that does have a small, but expensive, grocery store, a bar and a bakery. This house is remote and located down the hillside from two other homes; one occupied by a Canadian the other a British/US couple. We observed that these neighbors are feuding. There is no panoramic view, nor is there a view of Turrialba Volcano from this house. Tall, tropical vegetation surrounds the house and blocks any other view. However, many birds and butterflies are visible from the house. There is a nice, small 4 burner electric range with oven, a small, 3’+- tall GE refrigerator, a new microwave oven and a new bread toaster. There is a Stainless steel sink w/ a water heater that must be turned on at breaker box in utility room, with each use. Utility room is plumbed for a washer and dryer but has neither. (Nearest laundry is 27km+- or about 45 minutes by 4x4 in Turrialba, at ¢1,000 per kilo). Note: the only way into or out of the bathroom is through the utility room. There is a large window in the utility room facing up to hill to the next door neighbor’s house. Often men are working across the fence about 10 feet from the utility room’s outside door & window and there are no shades on that window. Be careful, someone may be standing a few feet from the window when you walk to or from the bath through the utility room. There IS a portable a/c permanently affixed in the bedroom BUT it cannot be moved and will not cool even the bedroom in the heat of the day. The house has no insulation and got VERY hot during the day and quite cold at night. Screens are missing from some widows while others are torn and loose fitting. The result is that the windows cannot be opened due to insects, which severely restricts air flow during the hot hours. Large windows have missing or broken locks. Anyone can walk up, open up and step in with no key needed. ALL drapes are sheer so if it is dark outside and lights are on inside, anyone can see inside like watching TV. No trash cans anywhere in the house. (we bought some) Bathroom has dual sinks, separate tub and shower but forget about the tub… the built-in stopper doesn’t work, it won’t hold water. Shower heads are difficult to manage. If you are 6’6” tall or more you MAY be able to benefit from the top one. I’m 6’, it shot over my head and cannot be lowered, prepare to hold the hand held shower head throughout your shower. Separate water heaters produce hot water for the shower, another for tub and sinks and a 3rd for the kitchen. All 3 water heaters must be turned on and off individually at breaker box in utility room, with each use. BE CAREFUL WITH THE HOT WATER! It takes a while to reach the faucets, but is SCALDING hot if no cold water is added. The owner is very nice and personable and I like him but, when we were there, this house was not ready for occupants.

We would like to emphasize that, when guests are unsatisfied with the place they had rented, FlipKey will refund their money; they are then free to relocate (finding an adequate, affordable and nearby accommodation is quite easy anywhere in Costa Rica). Note that this was not done by the current reviewers (they did cut their vacation short to return to US for reasons we cannot speculate on). Also, there are also some basic and readily verifiable facts that have been misrepresented; for example, the weather forecasts for Turrialba (see the Internet) indicate that during September the daily temperatures range from 24 to 27 degrees C (75 - 80 F), while at night they drop to 17-19 C (65-68 F). Neither of these would qualify as ‘very hot’ or ‘very cold’ - one can hardly think of a more ideal climate (anyone capable of complaining about it will surely be dissatisfied with everything else). Similarly, reaching the nearest (paved and well maintained) highway is not a heroic act of the review. We have posted a picture of the road connecting the house to the nearest town; as one can see, it is decent enough to be used by any type of vehicle without difficulty. A Google map indicates that the total distance is about 3 km (less than 2 miles), which can be covered in a few minutes of leisurely driving. The presence of local workers on the premises was atypical and of short duration (a neighbor was building a barn). These people have access to the premises only when invited, and are always very polite and respectful, and keep their distance from the existing houses - there was no reason to be afraid of them. The property manager met the authors of this review at the nearest town to show them the way to the property, invited them for several meals at his house and allowed them to use his pool, washer, dryer, cell phone and Internet connection. He also organized a fiesta (with over 20 local guests) in their honor, and took them to visit the neighboring village and school. They seemed to enjoy all this and never uttered a word of dissatisfaction; neither did they request more dishes, pillows or anything else (which would have been readily and happily provided). In view of this, their negative review is quite surprising. In any case, anyone who rents the house can rest assure that any of their requests will be immediately attended to and met, as would have been done for the author of the current review (had he ever asked).

We stayed at the house for a month and a half and really enjoyed it. It's very quiet at night. If you like the country side it's the place to stay. There is lush vegetation. We could hear birds and frogs often and saw a basilic on a nearby tree. The bed was very confortable and the furniture new, the only negative was that the fridge was a little small. The neighbors were very friendly and helpful. We recommend this house and we will certainly return there next time we are in Costa Rica.

À propos du quartier
The house is located on a former coffee plantation made into a gated community of several Canadian/American families. There is a decent road access to it; it is about 2km from the nearest bus stop (buses go every half hour, if not more often). There is a big river nearby (rafting). To get there, one has to take Highway 10 from Turrialba towards Siguirres. 26 km later one reaches a small town of Tres Equis (XXX in English!), and turns left, following a country road for about 3km. At the end of it is a tiny village of La Flor; turning left again, 500 meters later one reaches the "plantation" (as I like to call it), which is on the left side of the road. Enter 9.95, -83.597 on Google Maps to see the exact location (the green arrow will point to the roof of the house).
