We all thoroughly enjoyed our week at the Provosts House in Stromness. It was cold when we arrived, but very soon warmed up with the various electric fires provided, and thereafter was a most comfy and pleasant base. The kitchen is well appointed, but various nice eating places are within 5 minutes walk (although the nearest the Hamnavoe was always fully booked!)

Excellent location in a spacious house with good basic facilities and a great range of information to help you plan your stay and travel around. Clean, comfortable and good value. There is ample parking a few streets away in the Orkney business centre off Franklin Road.

Bob sent us lots of really helpful introductory information. The house has good facilities, dishwasher,washing machine, a bath and a comfortable bed. The kitchen was well equipped with mugs,china and utensils.The sitting room is lovely with lots of local information including O.S.maps. The heating was not really adequate and it is a shame not to have a downstairs lavatory. Thank you for your house for our first visit to Orkney.

We had a wonderful week staying at The Provost's House. With plenty of time before our arrival the owner, Bob, sent us a message with lots of very useful and detailed information. This was a great help to know, for example, that there is a Co-op very nearby which is open until 10pm every night. So no panic to get provisions when we arrived! The situation of the property is great. We could step out onto the little winding main street though Stromness, and The Tearoom just next door was the perfect place for tea and cake on our arrival. Although there weren't any designated parking spaces, we had absolutely no problem finding parking just a couple of minutes walk away. The house is full of character, and the big windows in the living room gave a view down onto the street as well as an ever changing view of the sea between the buildings in front. The kitchen was particularly well equipped with lots and lots of mugs, plates and cutlery! I don't know whether Bob arranged the weather for us too, but we were treated to lots of sun and blue skies which made our exploring of the island all the more memorable. Thank you so much for a super week. Hopefully we will return some time, and we would definitely like to stay at The Provost's House again.

The location is excellent and especially convenient for the ferry. The accommodation was clean and comfortable . In the immediate vicinity there was a very good restaurant and convenience shops. We would certainly re. book Provost's House on a return trip to the Orkneys.

La maison est située dans la partie la plus agréable de l'Ile. Tout est accessible très rapidement : les commerces, les bus et les bateaux, le terrain de golf et le sentier de bord de mer. La maison est construite sur un RC et deux étages. Elle est rustique, agréable et confortable. Un seul reproche mais il est important : un unique WC, installé dans la salle de bains. A quatre adultes, la gestion de la toilette et des toilettes est nécessairement très "fine". Je n'ose imaginer six adultes au sein de cette location.

This 3-storey stone town home is located in the centre of Stromness, within easy walking of shops, grocery & liquor stores, pubs (try "Flatties"), restaurants, charity shops, and the excellent Stromness Museum. The ground floor is the kitchen and eating area, with adjacent washer and dryer. The kitchen has a double oven plus microwave and is well stocked with equipment and utensils, as well as basic cooking ingredients like spices and oil. There is no dishwasher. The first floor living room is overlooking the street and with glimpses of the harbour, has a TV, and is cheerful and bright. The bedroom on the same floor has a queen-sized bed. The top floor has two bedrooms, each with twin beds, and the only bathroom, with tub and separate shower. Overall the house is very appealing, with bright bold wall colours and comfortable furnishings. There is no front or back yard outdoor area. Also there is no telephone or WiFi provided, and the only access to the pay-as-you-go WiFi is when you sit against the window in the living room. There is no designated parking on the front street, but there is a good-sized public parking area very close by, just uphill from the Provost's House, accessed by walking up the little lane outside the front door. Stromness is charming, and is an excellent location to be as a base for exploring other villages and towns on the Orkney Mainland, and for visiting the many wonderful neolithic and celtic remains which seem to dot the landscape everywhere. The other Orkney islands can be accessed by ferry from various points on the "mainland", and from Stromness, the furthest points to which it is possible to drive can be reached within just over an hour; most things are much closer. The owner "Bob' is very responsive to email and texting, and worries about his guests, so stay in touch with him to let him know when you plan to arrive, and whether you have arrived and settled in!
