Living like a local! Great location a couple blocks from metro; 1 blocks from pier & little island; & 4 blocks from Chelsea market. Area seems safe for travelers & owners are very kind & approachable! I stayed with 2 teens and we had a fantastic time exploring the city & this was our home base.

Midway between Macy’s and the Meatpacking District, you stay in the downstairs garden apartment of a 19th C brownstone on a quiet, residential street. It is not operated by some agency, instead your hosts, Karen and Paul, live upstairs. They are very helpful and gallant hosts who trust their guests and let you completely free to go about. With a good list of neighbourhood diners and restaurants they help you find your way around. The subway to the rest of NYC is just 2 blocks away. Besides a true king bed, a small but well-equipped kitchen and a spacious shower room the apartment has enough space to live in, making it very suitable for extended stays. Any amenities you might think of have already been thought of by Karen and Paul. A comprehensive library of English language literature is a bonus, should you be tired or bored by the city. The north-facing garden looks promising for warmer seasons—in December it was just a quiet view from the room. Thank you, Karen and Paul, for your hospitality last week!

We stayed in the lower garden level. A private entrance leads down a hallway to your studio. The studio is great, everything you would need for your stay including a great walk in shower. The bed is super comfortable and the studio is very clean. Now the best part, the amazing garden. Your door opens to a beautifully landscaped garden patio. Every morning we enjoyed our coffee in the garden, and at night it was a great place to just sit and relax while discussing the adventures of the day. This is truly an oasis within the one of the greatest city in the world. Karen contacted us before our arrival to let us know she and Paul would be on vacation during our stay and there would be someone looking after their home. She made sure we had all the information we needed and gave us the house sitters information in case we had any problems during our stay. They also provided great suggestions for dining in the Chelsea neighborhood. Chelsea is one of the best neighborhoods in Manhattan; filled with great people, excellent food and drink, and beautiful architecture. There are so many things to see and do. You are in a central location within Manhattan and just a short walk to the W 23rd subway stations that will get you anywhere you want to go. Tip: Get the MetroCard and bypass all the traffic. The High Line Park is at the end of the block. Take the High Line south to the Chelsea Market and Greenwich Village or head north to Gallow Green rooftop lounge and the Vessel. Just a block further west is the Chelsea Waterside Park and the Hudson River Greenway with great views of the Hudson River. (A note: if you are a runner head north or south on the Hudson River Greenway and enjoy one of the best runs of your life.) There is so much to do in this neighborhood, you will never be able to see it all. Our thanks go out to Karen and Paul for letting us stay in their home. We will definitely be returning to A Garden In Chelsea on our next trip to New York. We couldn’t image staying anywhere else while visiting Manhattan.

Enjoyed ourselves so much back in 2010 we could not wait to return. So recently spent another 6 wonderful days in the garden apartment. My sister in law & husband also joined us staying in another apartment two floors above. Once again hosts Karen & Paul were most welcoming & nothing was a trouble to ensure we all had a most relaxing stay. Its hard to believe that such a relaxed atmosphere can exist in the middle of a busy area. Since our last visit the bathroom has been completely revamped with great attention to detail. The rest of the apartment is very comfortably furnished. Location is also a terrific asset being close to the Metro, supermarket & many restaurants. The short walk to the popular High Line Park & Chelsea Piers are also appreciated. Do hope that we can return again one day.

We loved staying at A Garden in Chelsea! It is the perfect location on a quiet street steps from Chelsea Market, the High Line and Hudson River Park. It is an easy walk to the nearest subway station. We found it a nice walking commute to the West Village, Washington Square Park and the NYU area. The apartment is very spacious and clean. We were treated as special guests which I appreciated being a mother traveling with my 2 daughters. We had a wonderful stay and would highly recommend it!

Karen's apartment is in a great location, minutes away from the High Line, close to subway lines, great restaurants and shops. The apartment itself is up 2 steep flights of stairs, but once you're in it's as comfortable and well-appointed as your mother's place (if your great mother is warm, nurturing, thoughtful and cultured). We found the place to be immaculate and the bed was super comfortable. Great linens, too! (always a bonus). Our adult son slept on the sleeper sofa and even THAT was comfortable. I look forward to the opportunity to stay here again, without a doubt.

The brownstone is situated on what is surely the prettiest street in gentrified Chelsea, smack in the middle between two avenues, which means you get the benefit of proximity to convenient subways and wonderful restaurants without constant city street noise. We stayed in the large apartment two flights up. The only difficulty would have been with luggage, but Karen and Paul acted willingly as sherpas. Because it is upstairs we had wonderful light from huge windows and fresh air. The space is homey and comfortable, and so much more enjoyable than a tiny room in a hotel, no matter how modern the latter. For us the bed was a bit narrow but very comfortable with lovely linens. The bedroom itself is spacious and airy - two windows open to bring in courtyard greenery and airflow. The ceiling fans - both in the bedroom and living room - were excellent. No need for A/C or heating, at least this time of year. Also, there is plenty of drawer and closet space. We found the bathroom functional, but in need of a makeover. I would have liked a rain shower with a strong current... The towels, however, were exceptional, in size absorbency, and abundance, and the bathrobes were of similar excellent quality. We thoroughly enjoyed buying breads at the nearby, fabulous Sullivan Street bakery (recommended by Karen) and leisurely having breakfast in our robes in the spacious living area before heading out to explore. Chelsea neighborhood is wonderful - a great part of Manhattan to stay - and Karen and Paul were terrific - accommodating and responsive to our needs. We had a very relaxing, enjoyable stay.

I was happy with everything about this apt in Chelsea. Located within the brownstone home of the owners, it was clean, spacious, private, comfortable, well-appointed, cozy, safe, great neighborhood feel. If you don't know the Chelsea section of Manhattan, you will be pleasantly surprised with the neighborhood feel, nearby access to great food, hardware store, Whole Foods, small bodegas, anything you might need and overall safety and pleasantness of the area. The apt is within the brownstone where the owners live, which adds to what I refer to as a "true, European-style B & B" experience (here, you have a complete kitchen; the thoughtful owner made sure there was tea, coffee and even milk to get us started)--we felt like welcome guests in the owners' home, with complete privacy; yet the owner was always available should we need anything or had any questions. This apt has a spacious bedroom with queen bed, galley sized and well equipped kitchen, bathroom with double sinks, toilet and shower-tub combo and a very spacious main room that overlooks a quiet street (yes, quiet in NYC!). The main room has a 4 person table with chairs, a couch which pulls out into a very comfortable bed, comfy chairs, large tv, games, books from novels to travel guides and in between, a desk, wi-fi...so comfortable and cozy-the perfect combination of what anyone might need with the feeling of being a guest in a favorite friend's home with attached apt! There are a blow-up mattress (double height, as if both box spring and top mattress) and roll away available. Because I was with my 22 and 24 year-old sons, they used the pull out couch and inflatable mattress and said both were fantastic, very comfortable. We were offered plenty of closet space, and additional towels and sheets were available, as we thought we might possible have one additional person for one night. Subway and bus very convenient to the apt. There is a lovely garden/yard in back of the home, which we were welcome to use, and which the bedroom overlooks. Did I mention that the apt. has a lot of natural light, as well as plenty of lights throughout? We will definitely stay here again-and may try the studio apt. the next time. We stayed 5 nights with our two adult offspring in the 2nd floor apartment which was extremely comfortable and quiet. Woke to the sound of birds each morning and the view of trees and similar brownstone buildings. A few days prior to our arrival our host Karen, sent an email with transfer and entry information. When we arrived she greeted us and showed us around and answered all our questions. She is very welcoming and made herself accessible during our stay if we needed it. She is clearly a passionate advocate for life in this great city. We had all the amenities we expected (and more, milk in the fridge, tea and coffee, cereals for breakfast, cooking condiments, extra towels and bedding) and directions and contact details to nearby markets/laundry/restaurants/subway/buses were all thoughtfully provided in written form. The location is perfect for exploring NYC and we set off each day for a different locale after a hearty breakfast in one of the many nearby cafes or diners. The apartment gave us a taste of living a little more like a local and getting to understand what makes NYC such a fascinating place, beyond the sightseeing! Thoroughly recommend A Garden in Chelsea and am hoping we can make a return visit sometime.

We are a couple with a teenager daughter. We stayed two weeks in the apartment of the third floor which is fully equiped and confortable. The neighbourhood is very nice, typical of old New York. Fantastic location for walking to Greenwich Village, Soho and Midtown. The experience is very different from staying at a hotel. The place is warm and cozy, the owners open the doors of their home and make you feel welcome.
